We traveled to West Virginia for the Memorial Day weekend to the Dolly Sods Wilderness area in the Monongahela National Forest for a two night three day backpacking trip where we will cover almost 30 miles in a loop over diverse terrain, rock scrambles, water crossings, and some spectacular views. We started at bear rock preserve and then began our loop hike at the Red Creek trail head. Dolly Sods wilderness loop sits on an rocky high altitude plateau that is the highest plateau East of the Mississippi. It is a ridge crest that is part of the continental divide, the trails are made up of old logging roads, dry wash areas that drain the plateau, and single track trails that wind through marshy bogs, rhododendron tunnels, rocks, steep climbs, and stunning vistas. Our first day covered 10.5 miles past canaan valley ski resort and began our descent toward red creek, we made camp in a pine forest for the night. Join us tomorrow for day two of our hike where we hike some of the most challenging parts of the loop cover almost 15 miles with 2400 feet of elevation gain and 2200 feet of elevation loss and two water crossings of red creek that were about a foot and a half deep.
