Hiking Half Dome - Cables Down - Yosemite (How to Climb)

Here's how to tackle the most epic hike in Yosemite National Park - Half Dome with Cables Down. During the off season (mid-October to late May), the hand rails are taken down from the final Half Dome climb from sub dome to the 8846 ft (2696 m) high summit. This climb is intense but doable if you come prepared.

Half dome is a lightning rod.Not too long ago some dudes tried to seek refuge in a cave up there and were barbecued.Gotta get up there well before noon then back down

Yes, not clear how to transfer prusek knots unless untie and retie while on the incline. But prusek is only way to give you a hold right at that point if slip. Having just a carabiner on the cable you might slide all the way back to the below section.
@MOAB-UT

Probably slipped it through the cable it was passing through. It would have fit when unclipped. Helmet smart so you don't crack your head open on that rock hard granite if you slip.

Uh....my younger brother and I once did this (Climbed Half Dome with the cables down) in the late 70's, when I was in my 30's. Last time I climbed HD was in 1980...when I was 40, the cables behaved themselves....just like GOOD cables had otter! Soon, I plan to introduce my 2nd wife to the Devil's Postpile National Monument and we will drive through Yosemite to get to where we are going, but at ages 84 and 81...NO cable prancing for us! Also, last but NOT least......I now have a Senior Pass, so it will cost us nothing to drive through the park.....on our way to visit the Devil's Postpile. On another topic.......I've traveled the world to view total solar eclipses, have now seen ten, but the most stunning sight I have ever seen is right here in the states....Niagara Falls. This, we plan to do this spring, but want to wait a bit until full runoff is at its peak. BHE

He's using two prusiks each with its own carabiner. So you can unclip one, untie and then retie it above the cable connection, then repeat for the second one. This way there's always one attached. :)

The cables are anchored quite securely at the top. However, for the winter, the cables are removed from thier supports and lowered to the rock to prevent ice from forming on them and with the added weight, ripping them loose from their top anchor. BHE

Yeah. You slip, you die. We did this a few years ago. We used harnesses. Next day a woman slipped and died. 2019 Danielle Burnett. She was not clipped in and started to rain. Saw the helicopter. They did not even pull her inside. She was dangling beneath it all the way down. They do that to save time but in this case it was a body recovery so it did not matter. Still saves them fuel. Tragic. Have fun but do be careful out there.

@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT 11 месяцев назад
@@kudossuazo If you are not confident you might want to skip it. Your friend might be good but he can't save you. That is on you and god. Of course, if you do it, you would want a quality harness, proper knots, etc. Do not go cheap on this gear. You should use pigtails so two ends you can clip on- three in total. This way, one end can stay on the cable AT ALL TIMES for the spots where you might have to unclip to get past a stake. Not sure with the cables down if it is necessary but it might be. with the cables up, we had to unclip about every 20+ feet. *Bear in mind, you will very definitely NEED a device that grabs and locks onto the cable e.g., a "Cable Fall Arrester" aka Speed Fall Arrester.* Good ones are expensive but can save your life. Do not attempt without. If the stakes are not present and you slip, you can still die as you will fly down the cable- in a straighter line, but it will not slow you down a bit. Your friend above you can slip and take you clean off that mountain too. Weather, like rain and mist sets in real quick up there- even on a sunny day. It can kill you, like it did Danielle. Are you aware of Sub-Dome? It is a big dome that you must climb before you get to half-dome. I found it very tricky. There are no cables or anything to grab onto. Falls here can also easily kill you. Also, by the time you get there, your legs (at least my legs) were jello and I am in great shape. BMI 21. Good luck. I think you should reconsider. Enjoy the beautiful area- go to Lake Tenaya- do some valley walks or walk up to Sub-Dome but stop there. Best to start your hike around 4am with a quality LED headlamp and water, and salty snacks. Once that sun comes up, the hike is less pleasant. Watch out for bears. Wear layers. Be aware, the real danger is on the way down. You feel triumpant and over confident. You will take in the view and at this time, it is easy to get distracted and slip and fall. I almost did. I practically ran down, without clipping in most of the way. In hindsight, it was not a good idea.
