Sean, I used to run a lot once but haven't run for quite a few years. I hike obviously, ride my bike and pretty much try to preserve what fitness I do have. Hopefully I can hike the trails for a few more years yet.
For these situations where getting your feet wet is unavoidable, I carry aqua socks, aka water sport shoes. They make them very lightweight and easy to pack. I used them for years as a sea kayaker. Mine are very durable and do not hold water. Just tie them to the outside of the pack when you change back into boots. They'll be dry when you reach camp. Cheers.
I'm often shocked that people get their packs wet inside .... I've done LONG multi week hikes in Japan and Camino Spain/France and suffered heavy rain ... only needed a Poncho over myself and my pack and nothing in my pack ever got wet ... I never even used dry sacks or dry bags for anything inside my pack. Solution folks ... PONCHO
I haven't made that mistake again. I do have a poncho as well but for me that all depends on the terrain I am moving through. Dense bush and tall grasses and a narrow path can be problematical coupled with the wind conditions at the time. In my opinion there is no perfect solution.
