Mt. Washburn has two paths leading to its summit from the Grand Loop Road; one that starts at Dunraven Pass, and another that starts at a parking area on the old Chittenden Rd. about 2 1/2 miles north of the summit. We hiked the longer Dunraven trail that switchbacks up Washburn’s southwest volcanic slope. The trail climbs 1,393 feet over three miles, so the steepness is not too bad and not as much an issue for visitors as is the summit’s attitude of 10,243 feet above sea level; those not acclimatized to such altitudes may find the hike a bit challenging. Wildlife is usually abundant all along the way, including a good number of bighorn sheep, and once arriving at the active fire lookout tower on the summit, hikers have access to restrooms, and indoor and outdoor viewing platforms - the view from the summit is spectacular.
