Josh is hiking his off grid property in search of MORELS! We found a bunch recently and went back with the camera in hopes that we would find more. We aren't as lucky this time, but we DO get a BIG Surprise while in the woods.
Josh also chats about our upcoming plans for growing and harvesting our own morels next year as well as identifying Appalachian wild medicinal plants and business ideas for the website.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I never know what to make a video out of.. This one was literally just going for a hike, nothing special unless you count the snake LOL but otherwise just another day here.

I was out hiking once and came across a 6 1/2' rattle snake. Shot it, skinned it, ate it. I still have the skin. It was good eating.

To be honest I've never tried snake, always imagine it as being inconvenient with that many bones, but if we keep finding them like this I will!

You should make something for the little ones out the skin once you tan them. That way they can appreciate it and be able to use it as a reference for what to look for.😊

That was my plan! This one was actually right at shedding point so the colors didn't seem vibrant enough to fool with.

You know what's funny! When Celia was doing my dreads, she said - "you know what.. no one's going to call you Brad Pitt anymore because he doesn't have dreads.." Big big thank you from me for proving her wrong! LOL Even if I don't think it's true, I still take it as a compliment because he's clearly good looking if he's that famous.

You are correct! I've got both eyes peeled on every hike for ginseng! Although to be honest I don't know that I could dig them up to sell, more than likely I would try and to mark the location to then go back for the berries come fall. In the hopes of starting a new patch with the express purpose of selling those.

We have two metal detectors now! I bought the one off our wish list myself when it was on sale. I'm in the middle of making an initial unboxing and review on the pair of them now. ... but in order to do that video the way I want to I've got to get a tiller. So, using the metal detectors is waiting on the video.. and the video is waiting on a tiller (the garden and it's videos are also waiting on a tiller lol)

Birch and oak are considered the best firewood i know of

You are correct, I think black locust is the king of firewood... but I cry when I see people using it lol. It has so many other properties, Like being incredibly strong and naturally rot resistant!

Right birch is considered no 1 for firewood because oak go to building materials. still birch produce fine wood for furniture. Oak have even better quality as firewood and way better properties as building material.a oak will still give firewood from smal and crocked branches unless you dont male thousands of wooden butterknives.

#steepinthewoods what is it you make for snakes? Also how did you blur the snake out in the edit? I need to find a way to blur out faces when editing my runs

We use kinemaster and it has a blur effect that you can add in. As far as the snakes, you'll have to email us directly about that.

We've seen copperheads, black snakes, and especially little ringnecks, We have a bunch of those. And then the neighbor has found rattlesnakes but thankfully not us!

I've watched kings eat copperheads and I think they eat other venomous snakes... I've wanted to raise them just for that! Living here on coast copperheads and rattlers are prominent!

Lived off the grid years ago before people knew what "off grid" was. Never had to carry a pistol to kill snakes. Welcome to Appalachia.

Didn't take pistols to the outhouse.😊 Didn't take pistols on walks. Yes kids was every where, I was a kid. In fact the only good snake is a dead snake. My "off grid" people worked they didn't hunt snakes just to kill them. They had their place and we had ours. Now if a snake come with striking distance, it was taken care of. You have a blessed day!
