The Quilotoa crater Lake is one of the highlights of Ecuador!
Located 180km south of Quito, the Quilotoa crater Lake is one of the many volcanoes dotted along the northern part of the Andean chain.
The Quilotoa is an active volcano and erupted last in the 13th century - during this eruption, the top of the volcano collapsed and created a 3km wide caldera. Ever since, this caldera filled up with water and created the beautiful crater Lake.
You can hike the whole crater loop within approximately 4 hours and make it a day trip.
The highest point of this hike will bring you to 3.914m
Besides hiking along the crater rims, you can as well hike down to get to the shores of the lake. This however, is a very steep way up, so be prepared for a good workout 💪🏼
You can rent kayaks to explore the lake.
