This first episode of this series on my adventures hiking The Lycian Way 2022, takes us from the official starting point at Oludeniz to the beginning of the Patara Peninsula, or thereabouts.
I could not go on my planned motorbike trip to Spain in Jan/Feb 2022, which I explain why, later in this series. So I went to turkey to hike the 540km Lycian Way, from late Feb 2022, wild camping as often as possible, and had 31 days to complete.
I had only done one long distance hike before, and that was the GR20 in Corsica 5 years ago. I had no idea how my body would handle the weight of the rucksack on such a long trail.
Overall, the trip was a great experience. Fantastic scenery, awesome hiking, mountains n sea, flora and fauna, terrific history, and a fabulous 9 days at the end in the beautiful Geyikbayiri valley, where I spent 6 days climbing it's wonderful crags. To enjoy the climbing at the end of the trail, I missed out a couple of boring sections, and missed a few more due to bad weather, so I probably only hiked about 400km. Enough for me, I needed a change of activity. And climbing I love, even though I’m not at a high standard, and never will be now. I started too late in my life, but the pleasure I get from it is amazing.
I hope you enjoy watching the videos of this trip.
I have no idea how many episodes there will be, editing in progress. I hope to post one to two episodes per week.
This series is not a guide in any shape or form, it’s just a bit of fun showing my adventures. But if anybody has any questions about The Lycian Way, I will do my best to help.#oldwildandfree #lycianway #hikingadventures

I am planning on hiking this trail next month. I read online a bunch of things about stray dogs being a problem when entering towns. Did you have any trouble with dogs trying to bite you?

Hi, My worst experience with dogs is in episode 2. I don't believe the dogs are stray, it is just some are quite territorial, and act like guard dogs. The locals say to throw stones at the dogs, not to hit, just to scare them. I just used to wave my walking poles around and always faced the dogs. From my experience, the most vicious, scary looking and sounding dogs, were always tied up. By far the majority of dogs are friendly. Hope this helps. I think the worry over the dogs is worse than reality

@@oldwildandfree Hey, this is super helpful. I watched your ep 2 moment with the dogs, and it doesn't look too bad. I have about 2 1/2 weeks to hike the trail. If you had to skip any sections, which would you recommend? Did you always need to carry cash to pay for things, or can you use a credit card in small towns? Also, any other tips or knowledge you can pass my way would be greatly appreciated.

I missed out Gavuragli-Xanthos-Uzumlo. It is a massively greenhoused delta. Very boring. It is good to have cash, all shop keepers prefer cash, but not necessary in larger towns. There are always lots of cash points. Stay out of the mountains when it rains hard, especially when camping. Be prepared for cold days and nights, especially when in higher mountains. Mind you, Istanbul Airport was closed due to excessive snow about a week before I was due to fly home. In snowy, icy mountain routes, especially Tahagi Dagi, atleast have a pair of walking sticks, or better still, some crampons also. In these conditions, the navigation is difficult. I had to totally rely on Maps.Me
