The Wave
Length: 6.70 mile
Elevation Gain: 1204 feet
Route Type: Out and Back
After one and a half years of constantly putting in a monthly lottery and some daily lottery for this popular but rare to get permitted hike, I finally got in on my birthday month! I was a little worried because this is the hottest month of summer in Arizona and aside from that, it’s when the monsoon season starts! It was all worth the wait. The heat radiating on the sandstone makes me feel like I was inside the oven being baked. There is no trail so make sure to download an offline map and have your phone fully charged. One more thing that helped me is putting my phone on airplane mode to save battery life since I am using my phone to take pictures and videos aside from just using the map. I was already happy seeing the wave and ready to turn back around since it was too hot, but since this permit is hard to get, I decided to see the other attractions around like the Second Wave, the Swirls, Dune, and Melody Arch. I’m so glad I did! I was a happy camper! If there’s a chance that I can do this again, I would start hiking super early in the morning around 4am-5am. I started at 7am and it was already hot!
