There's a Nike Missile north of San Francisco on the Marin Headlands. Pre pandemic you could tour it and it's underground. They showed how it worked too. There were lots of them up and down the coast in San Francisco, along with a lot of batteries. We toured one of the batteries last January and were going to tour the missile but the pandemic happened. I didn't know there were some in LA too. Makes sense though. I agree, the history is really interesting. Great video!

You were in my backyard! :) This is a favorite and easy hike plus it gets us out of the Valley to where we can see the ocean on a good day. Nice video!

We used to ride our mtn bikes up to it sometimes, back before it was a "park". It was just a derelict oddity with a great view that everyone knew (somewhat inaccurately) as "the Nike missile base". There were no plaques all over the place to tell us what it actually was.

I know of a secret castle overlooking the Hollywood sign from across the 101 frwy, off of Mullholand that very few people know about

Pretty cool! We have an old Titan II Missile site out here that we've visited a couple times (haven't managed to film there yet as the pandemic hit riiiight on time to prevent that). Would be cool to go to this radar site as well to compare/contrast history. And yes... super cool that one can just wander the old site!

I mtn bike up there from the Westridge side. Fun single track coming down parallel to the fire road. Nice to have a close, quick, place to get a ride in.

Cool video but a 2 and half mile hike?? WTH? Back in the early 80s my friends and I visited the missile silo and it was like a 1000ft walk from dirt Mullholland Rd.. Back then they still had the entire underground place open. It was creepy as hell. I'm sure at the time we probably were not suppose to be in there but we found an opening to the tunnels and went in. Was so cool looking up the missile shaft and the control rooms and all the various rooms. Now that it's a public park that is all closed up for sure. Glad we went when we did years ago. I remember a bunch of honey bees were sort of blocking our entry into the tunnel. Haha. Back in those days most things were way more "adventurous". And I suppose dangerous for older teens/young adults to be doing. Anyways, that was a fun video to watch. Thumbs up.

I used to bike up there frequently in the 90s via Mandeville Canyon. I don't recall any of those things being accessible back then but I was usually oxygen deprived by the time I got there 😉. Getting there via Sullivan Canyon is a lot nicer hike than starting at Mulholland.

There are other silos around that are used by the CHP for communication centers. As a telecom tech, I serviced one in the hills between Rowland Heights and Brea. It was odd that to enter the area, you have to drive through communities with million dollar homes and at the time, drive past long horn cattle and cow pies! Back in those days, I was in the service and the thought was that if we did go to nuclear war, the best spot would be just under the drop zone of the bombs. Those bombs were so huge, what would be the point of surviving? People today don't realize how close we came to an all out conflict.

I'm surprised it hasn't been tagged with a bunch of ugly graffiti. I guess a certain type of people haven't discovered it yet. Thank goodness.
