Hiking to McBride Lake - Yellowstone National Park

McBride Lake is very hard to hike to because it requires crossing Slough Creek. Slough Creek is more like a river during all warm months of the year. I have never visited McBride Lake when the grass is green. At one point on this hike I turned around to see if there was anything behind me and I saw a grizzly coming out of the trees. I just passed through that spot about 5 minutes ago.

Hi Stan. First time commenting on your videos. Your content is exactly the reason why I cut the cord & left the vacuum of tv. There should be a RU-vid awards, like the Emmy's, & I would nominate yours. I appreciate that 90% of your airtime is natural sounds only. And that you only speak when there is something valuable to share. Your equipment & editing are top notch. Your approach to entering wildlife regions is novel & should be basic training for the average citizen. Please know you are a valued contributor to this society. My 1 trip to Yellowstone 10 years ago was amazing, and I hope to get back in 2023.

I worked Yellowstone for four summers back in the '60's. Never got up to Slough Creek, but sure saw way more Griz than I wanted to in my time there. Glad it was a sensible bruin and he skeedadled when he sensed you. That's not always the way with them---'them' being rather contrary when it suits them. We had snow every year just before we left for the season---even celebrated Christmas up there on August 25th. We had a saying, "Christmas comes but twice a year; once at home and once up here." Great memories. Thanks for sharing, Stan.

Isn't it great to know that there are places like this still in the lower 48 states just as they were 200, 400, 1000 years ago!

Thank you Arnon, yes the Lord is central in my life. May he bless you and your family over the holidays and always. People are always wondering how I am able to hike and camp in grizzly country all by myself. The Lord tells me, "I am at peace with the stones of the field and the wild animals are at peace with me." Thank you for your comments.

Great footage Stan. I spent a bunch of my time looking for grizzlies in Yellowstone between 1970-1977. We had to work hard to find them back then. I love Yellowstone!! I visited Colorado once. I took a drive up the mountain (probably Colorado Springs area) until the road was closed. I decided I couldn't just turn around, so I decided to get of the car and walk a bit. I could not believe how nervous I got (subconciously) as I got past a retreatable distance from the car. It was probably not much more than 15 feet, LOL. It got cold, had a type of tunnel vision and felt very vulnerable. I just turned around and decided that was enough, LOL - quite a learning experience. I even thought I was in Yellowstone - so embarrassing. I had no time for planning; I could only hop in the car and go.

@@louf7178 i know the feeling, instinct can get stronger than conscious thinking. If you ever get in a tricky situation, panicking is your worse enemy. You have to use our specie strongest weapon : our brain . And it works well when it remains calm and functional and does not focus on the danger only. To avoid the sun, you don't look at it.

Very good Stan. I know black bears will often not go into complete hibernation during the winter, but when do you estimate the majority of the grizzly population will be hibernating? And of course now is the time for the wolves to begin their winter hunting and I hope you are fortunate to see some this winter.
@StanMills
@StanMills 4 года назад
Hi MrWinger, I think it has to do with food availability. Once the the ground becomes too frozen to dig and the snowpack becomes to deep the grizzly will go into hibernation. They would not hibernate if they always had a food source. For example, the grizzly never hibernate over at the Wolf and Grizzly center in West Yellowstone because they have plenty to eat all year. I am still seeing plenty of Black bear tracks so they are still out also.

all you folks must be living in some city dump. This is just some nature spot in my book. It's not all that special. The problem is promoters building apartments and small malls destroying more and more forest and trees. This got to stop. The laws are really wrong defending those who think nature isn't an extension of the human body. Try to breathe in space if you disagree. Now go thank a tree for keeping you alive.

I admire your bravery! I've been to YNP 35 times in my life but have never gone that far off the road. I like to park my car and walk my corgi on the dirt road at Slough Creek. Even though there are campers there I keep an eye out for bears as I have seen many in that area. Once I had a grizzly bear stand up on its hind legs right on the other side of the road from me. I was in my car and it stared and me and sniffed the air. I cracked the window and the corgi sniffed back at it. One day a few years ago I saw 10 grizzly bears- adults and cubs. (I get up well before the sun rises). I lose track of the black bears. Again, I admire you for walking that far out there! Thanks for the video.

@@StanMills I get up (I stay at Grizzly Lodge) and get going in the car at 4 in the morning. The park is all mine! A thermos of coffee, granola bars and the corgi dog and me. Love it. By the way, I saw wolves grab a black bear cub from its frantic mother a few years ago. She made the most heartbreaking cries. The wolves sure looked happy. I was shaking. I also once saw a large meteor early in the morning zip over The Thunderer. Just beautiful.

Don't know about bison, but i do know that seeing a bear this time of year is a potentially dangerous bear, as most are in there Den and any that are out are simply foraging for more food to fill there belly's and fat stores for the winter, and much more likely to prey on anything they feel they can make a meal out of.
