Hiking up the cables at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park is a huge bucket list item to accomplish. In this video, Ethan hikes up the cables at Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. We hiked up Half Dome and reached the summit by going up the cables. The cables at Half Dome are super steep! We used harnesses when hiking up the cables to make it safer going up Half Dome. Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the world, and Half Dome is one of the most popular things to do while at Yosemite National Park. Ethan was only 12 years old when he hiked up the cables at Half Dome. We made this trip to Yosemite as a coming of age trip for Ethan since he turned 13 in the Fall. Many people ask, how old do you have to be to climb the cables at half dome, and we felt like Ethan was a great age to climb half dome at 12. The key was using a harness on the cables for added safety.

@@ActivelyYielding5.56 First, I don't understand the kind of person who would put smiley facts on a comment about a young girl falling to her death. That's a level of weakness, and lack of empathy, I don't understand. My point is you don't need a harness because the odds of falling are incredibly remote. The WET is what happened to her. Idiots coming up and not allowing her to safely descend is what happened to her. There are no freak storms in the Sierra in the summer. If you don't ASSUME thunderstorms on peaks in the early afternoon then you shouldn't be out there. Real hikers time peaks and passes. This was user error. Hate to say it, given what happened, but it's the truth. And shove your smiley faces. I can smell it from here that you live on table flat ground. Stay in your lane.

@turdwarbler
@turdwarbler 25 дней назад
@@luhed It wasnt a random thing at all. A random thing would be being hit by a wheel falling off an aeroplane from 30,000 feet. This was hiking up a mountain that had cables that you could clip into and not doing so. If you fell the chances are very high that you will kill yourself and maybe others. Why on earth would you not clip in ??. Stupidity. I have white water kayaked all over the world, and now I fly aerobatics, both high risk sports, and I minimise the risks as much as I can. Thank you for using a harness with your son, the culture of annoyance for using proper safety equipment needs to go "the way of the dodo". For anyone considering using a harness for a via ferrata route or hiking half dome, there are a few things you can do to make this even safer: 1. Always use both carabiners. One must always be clipped to the wire at ALL times when you are in transition as there is a risk of slipping while trying to clip to the next line and off the edge you go. 2. When clipped in, make sure one of the carabiners opening is facing the OPPOSITE direction of the other. It can and has happened that when you are trying to unclip your single carabiner to advance to the next cable you accidentally unclip the other carabiner as well. Having one in the other direction prevents this from happening. 3. Buy a via ferrata set that allows the line to expand and release tension if you do fall. If you use a static line the force from the fall can break your spine. Happy hiking!

I slept on top of half dome when I was 9 years old & 15 years old. One of the best & wonderful experiences of my life. Today, I've heard that sleeping on half dome is not allowed. I'm not surprised since I've also heard that they allow thousands of people to climb daily. I climbed half dome in the 1970's & early 1980's when the cables were stronger, the rock was not slippery (at all), and my brothers & sisters & my Dad only saw 9 other people that entire week! On the trail up to half dome, we camped & I still remember the solitude & pristine beauty of the park - forever gone these days I hear. We didn't use 'safety' gear nor harnesses. I don't think most hikers in the 1970's knew about stuff like that. We just climbed & hiked every mountain we could & loved it. We were very safe, and we took as long as we needed because there were no people behind nor ahead of us. Kids today are addicted to phones I hear & it is so sad for these younger generations. The kid in this video is very lucky to be able to climb at an age when it is easier & safer - because of his smaller size & youth. I remember it being easier when I was 9 than when I was 15 because of this.

Screw-lock is slow and triple-action carabiners are hard to operate with one hand.
