Hiking White Mountain Peak: The Third Tallest Summit in California

White Mountain is the third tallest peak in California and it is located on Highway 395 outside of Bishop and Big Pine. Just driving to the trailhead is an adventure as it is 16 miles on a rough dirt road. The hike to the summit is 14 miles following another dirt road and it passes a research station as it makes its way to the top. This is the easiest California 14'er but it is not easy as you will be hiking 14 miles at over 11,000 feet which can be really tough.

For those who wants to climb White mountain peak, try leaving around 3am so you dont get much sun exposure. It tends to get really hot on the way back.

I've done it. Once (or twice?) a year they open up the gate (Labor Day?) and you can drive up to the Research Station which saves two steep miles of hiking. Also on that day(?) the summit hut is manned by med students who will check your 02 level, heartbeat. blood pressure and a psych check much like a DUI test, for research purposes. Also on that day they drive a 4WD to the summit hut to pick up the med students and their gear and also save straggler hikers in distress. The research station has unofficial primitive med facilities which one hiker in our group used because she needed 02 for a bad case of AMS. It's the perfect test bed hike for going over 14,000' in California, no technical climbing and nearby rescue facilities if you bonk (there's a 4WD road to the top). Shasta and Whitney (Whitney requires a hard to get permit) are much more serious technically. If you're not Mr. Hardman/Woman I suggest a few hikes above 10,000' and weekend camping above 8'000' in the weeks before attempting to summit if you're a sea level dweller. Most importantly if the weather forecast is not favorable *do not* make a summit bid. The weather can change in minutes into subarctic conditions and you'll be exposed above 12,000' for 14 miles of hiking with no protective terrain.

I was just in Mammoth a few weeks ago and saw the turnoff for the ancient Bristlecone forest. If I'm going to do a 14er, White Mountain may be the one I do instead of Whitney. Thanks for this video!

Whitney is a better hike, despite the crowds. I would highly recommend Whitney if you can get a permit. There is a good reason why Whitney is so popular.
@iguillo
@iguillo 3 года назад
@@tacocruiser4238 what is the elevation gain for this hike compared to Whitney?
@tacocruiser4238
@tacocruiser4238 3 года назад
@@iguillo the elevation gain for White Mountain is approx 3,400 ft (because you start the hike at around 11,000 ft). The elevation gain for Mt. Whitney is 6,100 feet. But it's a relatively gentle 6,100 feet because that 6,100 is spread out over 11 miles. If you camp overnight on Whitney, you can split those 11 miles into two days which makes it even easier. And the rewards for hiking Whitney are greater in terms of both scenery and bragging rights. Nobody cares if you tell them you hiked White Mountain lol.

My first 14er. I made the mistake of starting to late in the day and hiked back most of it in the dark. We saw a wolf cross the trail a ways up

I was just in the white mountains about 4 weeks ago exploring both Groves of the Bristlecones thanks to previous videos of yours, with the intention of hiking White Mountain Peak but ran out of time. Good thing I didn’t cuz watching this video I can see the hike takes up at least 1/2 a day. Unfortunately copper top BBQ was closed that day so I had to refuel in Bishop. Awesome video homie.

It is a good half day for sure to get up to the summit and back. Bummer about Copper Top being closed but hopefully you will be able to go back and eat there!

The elevation is seriously crazy. My friend and I hiked around the ancient bristlecone pines and it took about 30-40 mins to get used to the thin air cuz you drive so fast up to the mountain that your body doesn’t have time to adjust if we had hiked up like those going up Whitney. I got winded just crossing the parking lot. Good advice to arrive the night before. The views from up at the bristlecones are amazing. So are you going to do the second highest peak, Mt Williamson? Thanks for posting. I enjoy learning more about my state from your posts

I've been to that "Thirteener" Mt Bancroft I think they call it. Colin Fletcher's early 1960s hike included a walk all the way up to White peak and down the north side in "Thousand Mile Summer".

Going to be hiking there in a month! I am most curious if there are any pit toilets at the research centers that you can use? There doesn't seem like there is much coverage to go out in nature! But can not wait to hike up this mountain nevertheless!
