I love that the way Ken is treated in Barbie land is basically just a reflection of everything women have experienced over the years in the real world. The Ken's don't just get handed power at the end and had to start at the 'lower levels' of the Supreme Court, because that reflects how it's happened for women in the world.

allan was basically made to be midge's boyfriend (the discontinued pregenant doll, who recently came back btw!) and was ken's best friend. there's a joke in the doll collector community that he's queer because on his box it says "all of ken's clothes fit him" aka they share clothes etc. barbie and ken have different types of barbies and kens but there's only one allan, which is why we only see one if him in the movie.
@nobleconsejera5278

So that completes the explanation about Alan being ignored. It’s a whole joke

This movie was also made for adult women who once played with Barbie. Also, go back and rewatch it and try to find the references to the great director, Stanley Kubrick, which should tickle your intellectual fancy.

Alan is described as Ken’s buddy but we don’t really hear a lot about him because he wasn’t as popular.

So that’s why he keeps being ignored all the time! It was a joke! Oh, my God, I had no idea! Thank you!

The running joke is that the movie is Barbie trying to prevent January 6th -and the line “ken isn’t something we really think about” is an actual line that was spoken to either the studio or the writers from Mattel when they asked what they could or couldn’t do .

your bit about sasha hits the nail on the head in a way that, im convinced that is the point- i mean she is just the "idea" of feminism but she doesnt practice it- both in how she treats barbie, her own friends and her mother, and how she misuses political language- she's a kid who knows something is wrong but doesnt put that energy into a place thats helpful- its not until the end when sasha uses her edginess to show that she respects her mother but is still shaky about understanding these concepts- the bit where she calls barbie a "white saviour" i feel like ppl miss the line that comes right afterwards- which is barbie being like "i didnt do the saving, YOUR MOTHER did" gloria's the real main character of the movie!!

That opening was a pastiche of 2001: A Space Odyssey with apes discovery a monolith, a representation of using bones as tools and weapons. It's a slow burn of a sci-fi film, but a classic with fascinating visual effects that still hold up. In Barbie, stereotypical Barbie is the monolith for feminism, a weapon against the cycle of motherly expectations of girls to play house and take care of baby dolls. Of course, it's not a one-for-one reading of what Greta Gerwig's film inspiration, but a visually similar a social end of an era. Like Barbieland's fraught conceit, it is flawed and not the ideal in the real world. I really liked the discourse it starts. I don't think any film is a monolithic solution to all problems, but if they can raise awareness and social conscious in a way to adds to or begins a bigger conversation after, I think it's done something of substance than doesn't just pander to the lowest denominator; in my opinion, it does Kenough to raise awareness of the doll's problematic history while highlighting it's original good intentions.

I went to the theater to watch this film with my mother and made us cry like no other film before. It reminds that mothers are just girls with the same dreams and desires as their daughters. I love when Barbie says "you're beautiful" to that old lady. Society and media likes to remind women constantly that once you start to age you basically stop being beautiful, but that's not true. This film makes me feel grateful and full of love for all the women I got by my side, my mother, sisters and friends. All incredible women that love and grow, and in one way or another, help me try to be a better woman myself. I'm so happy that you enjoyed it, Eric! I really like your reactions and commentaries. I'm hoping you'll see the other films from Greta Gerwig in the future 🥰

The sequel should be “Ken in a Barbie World.” Ken’s search for an identity. Ken as a doll is just an accessory for girls when playing with Barbie. Thus, Ken’s dilemma (Ryan).

Allan is Kens best friend he was released a bit after Ken and Midge were released in the 60s I believe he was discontinued twice I believe he's also the Boyfriend of Midge he was part of the Happy family midge set (Pregnant Midge) also all the dolls you see in Weird Barbies house are also actual dolls that were cancelled or discontinued because of some specific "Issues" each doll had.

This movie was incredible it touched on sensitive subjects without being harsh, added comedy in and was added in moments that were suitable. Loved the outfits even Ken’s white coat. I was curious about the horse thing because Barbie does have a lot of horses so you’d think there would be horses in Barbieland. Also where are her sisters? I know she has at least one younger one. Its odd they left her out. Loved the reaction by the way. Highly recommend Little Women its a great film based on an old, old book and while the original film is nice, the director did fabulous for the recent version.

Oh, there's a Barbie for each branch of the American military, and a military medic. I'm assuming those dolls didn't come with any toy weapons for the same reason they discontinued Midge and none of the Barbies have tattoos. They're very concerned about what it looks like they're promoting with their products. Along those same lines, let me tell you about Magic Earring Ken. Magic Earring Ken was produced in a time when Mattel execs were concerned about Ken's clothes being outdated, as though anyone cared about Ken. To get some fresh looks, they sent their ideas people to night clubs. I don't know if it was the night clubs they chose, or just the type of people at night clubs in the early 1990s, but apparently they ended up observing mostly gay men, and evidently they didn't know it. There was a trend among the queer community in the late 80s to wear a cock ring (a sex toy shaped like a ring, for anyone who doesn't know) on one's person, and the location of the ring supposedly indicated something about one's sexual preferences. In 1993, Magic Earring Ken was made wearing the latest queer fashion of the time, including a cock ring on a necklace. In the movie, the necklace just says "Barbie" but if you know about the doll, you know the truth. It gets better, though. Magic Earring Ken immediately became a gay icon and flew off the shelves. Mattel realized their what they'd done and discontinued the doll after just 6 weeks, but it was too late. Magic Earring Ken was already, and remains to this day, the best selling Ken doll every made. Mattel is still hugely embarrassed by his existence, I'm surprised they let him in the movie at all. From what I read, Greta Gerwig intentionally overwhelmed Mattel with digs at the company in the script so that it would be too difficult for Mattel to argue about every other line and they just let most of it go.

Asian Ken was the Real Enemy to regular Ken, always wedging himself into Ken's business. And when he split the other Ken's into two groups,he caused the Barbie's to return back into control. Asian Ken is the Benedict Arnold of figures. A plastic quisling.

Glad you're enjoying Greta Gerwig's work. She is in my current top five of living writer-directors ... her first two films, "Lady Bird" and "Little Women", raised the bar for how narrative can be structured and character dynamics can be fleshed out, and doing so in a way that's very human / empathetic. Though I'm on the fence about whether "Barbie" lands in the same ballpark as a whole, the visual craftsmanship has been just as impressive.

Ahhhhh you'll always be my favorite reactor, love your commentary and reaction. I feel like just by hearing your thoughts about it can make me cry, specially how you talked about the importance of intersectionality. As a transmasc non-binary POC that is exactly how I felt about the movie, is based on a very surface level and white feminism. Regardless of that I really loved the film overall, and I think it gives space for other media to touch on different branches of feminism and intersectionality. A little fun fact is that Earring Ken was discontinued because during production they didn't know an earing was gay signaling, which caused it to go flying off the shelfs cause he was seen as a "Queer Ken" 😎😎

Sasha and hee friends are named after the bratz dolls, which were a huge point of contention between Mattel and MGA entertainment after a designer created the line while on the clock at Mattel but she left Mattel and went to work at MGA and brought the line into production while there. So that's the reason why Sasha and her friends are unlikable at first
