The year I lost my brother, I would cry all night so that I could be strong for my parents during the day. So, I would be so sleep deprived during the day. I’m grateful for my teachers that year because they knew I was going through a lot and let me sleep in class when I was done with notes and class work. I can’t imagine how I would have graduated without their support and the support of my classmates.

I went from a straight A student with perfect attendance to B or C’s while sleeping through half my classes. I’m not proud of it but I couldn’t help it. My mom was dating a very young man and he was throwing drug parties at my house daily ands when I wasn’t there my father was assaulting me. The only place I felt safe was at school. The only place I could safely sleep was at school. I legitimately did everything I could to stay awake. My world history teacher had me in tears. He didn’t teach. He turned off the lights, and read from notes he would project on the board. And I could not physically stay awake. He wouldn’t even let me sit and try to take notes. I had to stand in his class everyday and even then would fall asleep standing. And told me I was trash and didn’t deserve to pass.

@@melissacoviello2886 I had two teachers that where amazing and lie these (and you) my English teacher (ninth grade and eleventh) and a math teacher. Both would support me. At that time I was incapable of telling anyone what was going on, but they knew I wasn’t ok. They ganged up on that teacher and forced him to give me my missing assignments (I missed a LOT of school also) The worst part was that every single test he would give I passed with an a or occasionally a high b. He was failing me for not staying awake and he refused to give me my make up work all year. (Twice) I had him two years for different world history classes. Both times the two teachers (once I broke down and told them what he was doing) went and forced him to give me the work. Both times I would do a years worth of make ups in a week and passed his class. He was even angrier with me because of that. He hated me for things I could not control. I still keep in contact with that English teacher. She has taken me to family events with her and her family and as long as I live I will be greatful to her. (And my librarian who went to her and my math teacher to gang up on the bad teacher) my kids now visit my librarians farm regularly!

Right... Those are the same types of people who, as my health deteriorated my Junior and Senior years of High School, said my parents just needed to be tougher on me (yeah, that'd stop the seizures, the burning stabbing pains tearing me apart from the inside, the constant medical tests and hospitalizations... sure, it would). Those were the pieces of garbage who ridiculed me at church, who called me a useless sponge, no matter how hard I tried. Those are the scumbags who led me to push myself until my health COLLAPSED and I spent 6 months in bed before we figured out how to bring my health back up to the point where I could sit up and use a wheelchair, my new buddy for the rest of the my life. I let my kids sleep if they fall asleep in class. Some of my kids are living on their own, working nights, sick, etc. In fairness, I have no kids who sleep all the time in my class. So I doubt I'd have the "just keep sleeping" policy if it was a daily problem.
@MountainPearls

See. Others do. Some kids I would let sleep b/c I knew they were their colicky baby sister all night. Others were up playing video games…but then I got accused of favoritism and was forced to wake every child up by my administrator (parent complaint). I’m so tired of the interference (so often by helicopter moms of the kids playing video games) they ruin things for kids who do need accommodations because of their home life (and admins that won’t back you up in your decisions). We didn’t take 4 psych classes and umpteen pedagogy classes in college for no reason (was working on a masters but I doubt I’ll go back to field ). They treat us like we know nothing (especially compared to just a decade ago) and have taken almost every decision out of our hands and I’m about fed up.

Her parents were in and out. She was literally 18 years old parenting her brothers groceries everything was on her . She would miss school a lot she had so much responsibility on her shoulders . I could tell she was really tired she looked so defeated but she did her work . She crosses my mind a lot I hope she’s doing great now and her brothers💜 she briefly mentioned her parents they seemed pretty in and out from the little bit she did say.

With the sleep conversation, I understand both sides. It's such a fine line sometimes, because it can be very context specific. If a child is being avoidant about participating as a way to disrespect you versus a child was taken to a homeless shelter the night before and literally can't keep their eyes open, in my opinion and practice, the response should be different. It's never easy as a teacher because you're always having to make quick judgement calls, because you have about thirty other sets of eyes watching you as a model. I also came from a very chaotic and abusive home environment. I remember we had nap time from preschool through first grade when I was a kid. I was always hypervigilent and kept myself awake so that I wouldn't be perceived as lazy. One time in 1st grade, I instantly passed out. I woke up when the final school bell was about to ring... three hours later. I was so embarassed. I kept apologizing and even cried. My teacher just patted me on the back and said it was okay. With that said, I am thankful for the strict teachers, but I am also thankful for the ones who saw my needs when I wasn't able to.
@MountainPearls
@MountainPearls 2 года назад
You can be both, the problem is (I saw that as a teacher who saw it and tried to practice it). The problem is that many teachers refuse (especially the jaded ones who are burnt out and broke…so back AGAIN to the system…at least to an extent).

I was SEVERELY anemic in high school, and I now have suspected narcolepsy. I'd fall asleep all the time, and was never woken up once. I'm so grateful for those teachers that did that. I genuinely couldn't stay awake. I'd pass out standing up if I had to. Not a single time was I ever woken up and that's just.. It shows that people here care. I'm definitely on the side of letting kids sleep in class, you never know what is going on. For myself, it was severe health issues. For a friend of mine, it was her being abused so badly she couldn't sleep in fear something would happen to her while sleeping. Her only safe place was school.

When I see a student sleeping in class, I don't make a big deal out of it. I go on teaching until I find a moment to go over there without drawing a ton of attention. I quietly wake the student and ask if they're OK. We don't always know what is going on at home, but sometimes we do. In one case, they student had just been removed from his home and put in foster care. He wouldn't talk about it, but I was aware of what had happened, so I let him sleep. I can't imagine trying to sleep at night in a new home with a new family. I'm glad he felt safe enough in my class to rest.

@@Hannahsx When I was in school, I remember there were teachers who woke up students in cruel ways, like screaming in their face to scare them awake, slamming books on their desk, etc. I think it's okay to wake a kid up or let them know it's not okay to keep falling asleep and you'll talk to them about it later or bring it up to their family, but I swear, some teachers take delight in the idea of scaring a kid while they're vulnerable and "disobeying" them by being asleep (which like you said, is sometimes very hard or impossible to control - even without a medical issue, let alone having one).

I mean let’s be honest... A VAST majority of kids falling asleep in class don’t have some extenuating fucked up circumstance that excuses them. I know when my friends and I fell asleep in class it was because we were bored, stayed up all night playing video games, were hung over, or were stoned. I guess that’s part of being a good teacher though. Knowing enough about your students circumstances to let them sleep because their home life is fucked or to wake them up because they smoked a joint at lunch and ate too many cookies and is now in a food drug coma...

I'm reading the comments right now and am seeing some about the sleeping conversation and I would just like to add my own experience. A few years ago I was falling asleep in class and the teacher would call me out in front of everybody, people would stare and judge, it was just an awful experience. But only after it got really bad did the teacher bother to ask me why I was falling asleep and couldn't concentrate, and the reason was that at the time, I was living in a very unstable, and at times abusive home, and sometimes it caused me to stay up at night. I told the teacher that my home wasn't exactly stable and she told me to keep my home life and school life separate. I continued having the teacher for the rest of the year, and things at home were just getting worse, but I had no one to turn to because my parents weren't available for this and I didn't feel supported by my teacher, so I kept things bottled up to the point where I had a mental breakdown at school. I developed unhealthy coping mechanisms such as self-harm and began to feel suicidal, these things affect me to this day, and I think that if I just felt like there was someone there for me, then perhaps things could've happened differently.

The one thing I would like to mention about the excuses comment from Bri is that some students may be going through a tricky family scenario. That means that even if asked about home life they will not say anything out of fear and so therefore appear to be fine. Going to the parent is not always the answer especially in middle school or high school years. In that case, calling the parent may even cause fear for the child but the teacher will never know. The student may have learned very well how to act and be going through severe anxiety. I don’t know, I just hope students out there are getting the help they need.

In basically all of high school I'd have certain classes where I just couldn't stay awake, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. My bus came at 6:45am and the first bell rang at 7:30am, and no matter how early I went to bed, I just could not wake up with enough time to gather myself and get ready properly. I developed depression and (more severe) anxiety because of the stress of trying to stay on top of everything; I already had issues eating enough before high school, and my body started reacting to the change in sleep. I got nauseous if I woke up before 7, and if I was nauseous I wouldn't eat breakfast, and if I didn't eat breakfast, I'd be a hangry wreck. If for some reason my mom let me sleep in and drove me to school, I'd get a late pass (despite having documentation from my various medical providers confirming that I had legitimate struggles with food and sleep). One year I eventually accrued so many late passes that I got a detention. Through middle & high school I also ended up spending most of my time in the nurse office to wait out my panic attacks, because teachers would get suspicious if kids were in the bathroom too long (a few times I was accused of skipping class, when I'd been shaking uncontrollably & kneeling next to the toilet for an hour). Point is, I was (am) an anxious kid. I eventually got an IEP in 10th grade but until then, a lot of my teachers thought I was being difficult on purpose for attention. My 8th grade math teacher would staple my late notes to his podium; my 9th grade French teacher said that I was lazy and disruptive in my report card ("she would get a better grade if she showed up to class instead of hiding in the bathroom all day"); my 9th grade math teacher sent me crying into a hallway of kids after I failed my midterm; my 11th grade math teacher made my best friend cry, and after she left his class, he said to me "you're next." Now I cannot stress to you enough that I had a variety of very understanding and helpful teachers in middle and high school. That being said, however, I'm not sure if they made up for the shitty ones. Too many of them simply ignored my IEP or did the bare minimum accommodations while rolling their eyes because I didn't "look" like I needed special help. I have ADHD that severely affects my executive functioning (focus, organization, motivation, etc) and it can be really damn difficult to do things that seem easy to other people. I tried hard because I wanted to be seen as a hardworking student, but some teachers only see the grades and not the effort, and it becomes draining to try to keep up the act. I know that Briana says teachers just want to see you try, but way too many teachers at my high school were exclusively concerned about grades. Like, they'd make it easier for or give classroom privileges to students with better grades, and used academic performance as a measurement of character. My school was diverse, but very few of the "good" students were black (and I know for a fact that a lot of the black kids were smarter than the white kids who just sat pretty and sucked up to the teacher). You could tell that most of the classroom (kids & teachers) didn't want to be there. The worst part is that I REALLY love learning and high school ruined it for me. I am in college now but it took me some time to realize that academia had a place for me. My college is much more vigilant about abiding by the ADA and I finally feel happy in a school environment. I'm around other people who want to be here, especially other people who have learning difficulties. I'm not exactly sure why I decided to type out this mammoth rant, but it feels good to get it out, so thanks I guess. Y'all give me good vibes and I love listening to the pod.

These are 3 & 4 year olds. Most of the time the 4 year olds would be fine on their own during nap times but the 3 year olds would ask us to pat their backs for a few min. They would turn all the lights off & play this really soft soothing music for nap time…. I won’t lie I nodded off a few times during nap time in there 😂. I had a teacher who was a therapist (it was a proctored online remediation class for juniors and seniors) and she was the only teacher I knew who let kids sleep. I think it was because we would genuinely tell her about our sports and jobs and lives. In like March/April of my senior year I got kicked out and she was one of the only teachers I told, she was so awesome❤

@Amarianee
@Amarianee 2 года назад
Is it a private or public school though? Private schools can make you buy them yourself, but a public school is government funded, so if they required kids to wear a uniform, it would have to be provided by the school. That's why public schools can have restrictive dress codes, but can't actually have a "uniform" policy without providing said uniforms, which most schools don't have the budget for.

Ooooh! I have successes, not fails. My 5th grade teacher let us have a whole entire court congress about people apart of the Boston Tea Party. That taught me to never be a lawyer cause I lost the case :’D. It was so fun! My 7th grade teacher was a HUGE Harry Potter fan (like moi) and her whole room was decorated with Harry Potter stuff. She even had the House Cup, and would sort us into our houses. The house with the most points would win and amount of tickets for a prize, and you earn the points by answering a question correctly or being helpful. Also super fun. I was a Slytherin in her class :’). But that’s okay because I’m a Gryfferin and a Gryffindor by choice 😎

Before I was a teacher I worked for a school district maintenance department, and sometimes helped set up those pods. They are dropped off in pieces from a semi truck onto cinder blocks, and we go under them and bolt them together. They are extremely cheap and often times a strong storm would blow in the doors and cause the roof to leak where they are joined.

I was just rewatching this video, and Lauran’s comment about her “old” school that was built in 1965. The first elementary school I attended was built in 1950, and the second was built between 1959 and 1960, and opened in September of 1960. I was a student in the second grade the day the school opened. The high school I attended was down the street from the elementary school. It was constructed between 1964 and 1966, and the first class of 9th graders on September of 1966. I entered as a 9th grader in September of 1967. However, when I first started teaching 1st grade in February of 1990, the school I began my career opened in September of 1901. The school opened with over 1500 students , mostly German,Italian and Jewish immigrants and over the years the school has remained a haven for children of immigrant families, only now they are mostly Hispanic and South Asian. The “new” wing opened in 1904-05, increasing the available classroom space. I was the school’s “historian” until I retired almost 7 years ago. I was able to digitize the 1905 photo album, as well as create a timeline of all of the school’s principals from 1901-2017. It was an interesting experience.

Love y’all so much!!! I would recommend not letting your kids sleep in class unless they are like little cause nap time but do brain breaks. Brain breaks are where at the beginning or end of class or if everyone is having trouble concentrating or smth, give them like 1-2 minutes to put their head on their desks or take a few deep breaths or smth. It really does help… my seventh grade teacher did this with fidget toys and you pick them from the box and relax for just a bit and then go back to learning. It can be literally 30 seconds just a moment for kids to get back to reality ig

I love how people are surprised that schools had pods and people aren't just allowed to go to the bathroom. Meanwhile my schools growing up had pods that didn't have AC(there were only two classes there at a time), we couldn't go to the restroom during class, and our bathrooms pretty much were entirely outside. Surprisingly the only thing people complained about was that we were forced to be outside for recess when it's over 100 degrees outside (we couldn't afford shade)

In Freshman year of High School (that's 9th grade, 14-15 year olds), my social studies/general history/world history teacher taught us a lesson about Martin Luther, the Luthern church and the sale of indulgences. I'll never forget the lesson because she tricked us in an experiment. The experiment was telling all of us (honor/scholars/arista students) that we can get easy As for the rest of the school year if we paid in cash for the grade. Everyone was READY to pay for these grades (even though we all got As and 100s in our tests/homeworks/class works; we still were ready for easy As). She reveals it was all an experiment to teach us about how easily the masses can be manipulated by these sale of indulgences.

I used to sleep in my first period class as a senior for no other reason than I was tired from not getting enough sleep. I had to have a job to pay for my gas and car insurance (my requirements for being allowed to drive). I worked at AMC as a projectionist and would regularly not get out of the theater till between 12-1 am. Then a 30ish minute drive home resulted in me not being asleep till between 2-2:30 almost every night. School started at 7, so I just slept that first period and was awake till I got out at 2:30pm. Then was back at work generally between 4-5pm. It was a college elective class (precal) so I just didn't care. I should have just dropped the class, but kids don't really learn about the ability to drop classes till you get to college where the information is a lot more common.

I will say as a good but VERY tired student, I try so hard to stay up in class but sometimes it just takes over, especially in certain classes, I think it’s fair to not allow sleeping in class but I don’t think it’s fair to not take excuses, because some people really do be going through it or just mentally cannot withstand a long class.

Ms. Richardson needs to replace those Xpo markers with a yard stick. My 6th grade teacher would walk the aisles (we had long table desks) whenever he was giving a lecture, and if someone was sleeping, he would randomly smack the table with the stick. Everyone awake knew what was going to happen (because he would walk with the stick) so we weren't surprised, but it scared to he bejeesus out of the kid who was sleeping. My best friend was the sleeping kid once, and full on fell out of his chair when the stick hit the table. 😂 No injuries and still gets the point across.
