Talent is a very real thing. Natural god-given ability is real. But the difference between a talented person who works hard and one who doesn't is greatness. Plenty of talented people don't put in the work and plenty of hard-working people lack the talent to 'make it'. The world is not one of unlimited opportunity for everyone. That is what makes greatness like this so breathtaking and special. How rare are such gifts, and how difficult to make them soar.

Wow. Just wow. I grew up listening to Milstein and Menuhin's recordings. I began playing them when I was in Junior High School. I don't play much any longer. I just recently discovered Hillary Hahn's recordings. All I can say is that her playing brings tears to me eyes every time. I am not sure how you could possibly join technical proficiency with artistic vision any better. So much going on with these pieces. Multiple voices and harmonies. How to play them is up to some debate. Her playing is what I've always imagined in my mind as the vision Bach had when he wrote these sonatas and partitas. What joy. That's all I can say. What joy, and how lucky we are to have her! I'll be keeping an eye out for performances she does later in her career to see how she changes her interpretation of them.

@@davehshs651 What on earth is a "recovering fundamentalist"? People throw that word around in reference to Christianity constantly without knowing at all what it means. Bach wrote some of the most glorious chorales and professions of God's glory in history, as I'm sure you're aware.
@davehshs651
@davehshs651 6 лет назад
@@RohannvanRensburg Please reread my original comment. I contrasted the 3 hymns performed here with Bach, whose music I love and stated that I would rather hear (than the hymns). A "recovering fundamentalist" is simply a person who was emotionally scarred by being raised in a bigoted religious environment and is still *recovering* from that upbringing. What is so hard to understand about that? Of course, I'm aware that Bach was a Christian, but his music was not generally played in the church where I was raised, so, fortunately, I don't associate his music with my upbringing. I'm grateful that the great Masses are in Latin, because the meaning of many of the words is horrendous, generally referring to a vindictive God who condemns people to eternal torment simply for not holding the *proper* belief.

I have heard the violin for many years and still think most of the music on it is whiny (not screechy; that's just bad playing), as well as overrated, and that the viola da gamba and the modern cello are superior string instruments. My favorite note on the violin is literally the lowest it can play. Whenever I hear it in a piece, I'm home, right before the sound is ruined again. The Bach partitas and sonatas, as well as the Beethoven concerto and later sonatas (9 and 10), are some of the best virtuosic yet still serious pieces written for the instrument before Paganini and Mendelssohn ruined it and turned it into a circusy, sappy mess for the next 100 years. (I am mostly joking about this generalisation, though I dislike most of Paganini and Mendelssohn's music... they feel so childish/immature.) Go listen to Frank Martin's "Polyptique." Wonderful concerto, considering it was written in 1973. Rarely played. All that being said, I'm a pianist, so I probably have no idea what I'm talking about and most likely prefer the cello because it doesn't blow out my eardrum when I accompany it in an enclosed room.
@sorim1967
@sorim1967 5 лет назад
@@ulengrau6357 Given that Mendelssohn has been, BY FAR, the one musician that matured earlier than any other in the history of our planet, your disrespectful comment could not have been more wrong. How can the 14 year old composer of the octet be considered "childish/immature"? How can the musician that single handedly brought the St Matthew Passion back to life from total oblivion and in the process, also, single handedly created the interest for the first time, in "classical" music (i.e. music written a few generations ago), the unselfish promoter of composers that did not enjoy his fame (e.g. Schubert)? Are the 'songs without words' "childish and immature"? Is it childish and immature to depict the waves in the cave as he so masterfully did I in his Hebrides overture or are you insulting his reputation because of the popularity of his music? And as for his violin concerto, which was so admired by such "immature" composers as Tchaikovsky and Sibelius and praised by no less a master as Joachim as the jewel in the crown, when compared to Beethoven's, Brahms' and Bruch's: are you serious that Mendelsohn "ruined" the violin? How insulting your comments are to the composer who in his service to music has done more for our enjoyment of music than almost every person in the history of the planet. A great musician would have the modesty not to reach the extreme views you have and find appreciation in every instrument. That is why Vaughan Williams, who found beauty in the diatonic harmonica and the base tuba (wrote concertos for these instruments) was a true musician and you, in your ridiculous comments about the violin, are a "pianist" but not a musician.

In fact ( if im not wrong ) the acoustic of those instruments was made thinking in the reverb of places like churches, so the real sound of the instrument appears with the right amount of reverb. I played the gigue (badly) when I was a kid. After 30 years’ hiatus I was inspired by Ms. Hahn’s playing to take out my violin again just to see if I could play one single measure with a glimmer of her intonation, confidence, precision and perfection. I’ll let you know if I ever get close. Simply a breathtaking performance. Thank you so much. Steve K.

I loved the hymns...HH surprises me...I wonder if she was raised listening to these hymns in a church. She just improvised it so naturally, like she was so familiar with it.

Saw her perform with the Honolulu Symphony when she was a teenager- concert master could barely keep up with her Bach duet encore. Absolute wonder then, even more so now. Kudos to her parents, teachers, mentors, and G_d given talent.

There is something about Hilary hahn I don't understand...I'm new to listening to classical music and her playings are always extra ordinary... I don't understand why ppl call her a robort ..

Because her vibrato is not very pronounced, she doesn't make faces like perlman or so when she plays and because her technique is absolutely perfect

She is very athletic, she moves very idiosyncratically as she plays, and as another comment here states, she communicates more in her playing than via facial expression

Oh how I would love for her to make a CD of Christian music. Her talent is a gift from God and I thank Him every time I listen to Hilary play. So moving is her music. I Bach could hear her he would say, "at last, that's how it should sound".

Whoever clicked Thumbs Down probably just didn't want to hear anything religious. And they probably wouldn't even have known it was religious if she hadn't said anything. They would have loved it and listened to it every day, woken up to it, etc. But they can't now because she said it was religious and they've got a line to toe. That's how bitter and petty they are.

Stylistically quite far from the time but I still love the sound and chiara-oscura that she produces. With Bach, there are so many levels and possibilities that any style or any instrument can succeed as long as there is the committed artist.
