I used an old Rotozip tool for my homemwade TPG--Similar to your item but with collets rather than a chuck. The newer models look like they'd be harder to mount--no nice, round sections on the body to grip with a simple jig. Look forward to seeing what you do with this new tool.

Rob, your videos convinced me that I had to have this tool. So much so, that I laid out $40 for a power converter so I could run it on 110v here in the States. I'm not disappointed, and thanks for the heads up. I made a tool post clamp out of ½" aluminum and everything is A-OK. Now I can regrind the Morris tapers on some Banggood fixtures that are not quite concentric (seems to be a problem with them).
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi Charles, Glad to hear you're pleased with it. I'm always a bit worried that my appraisal won't meet people expectations. Those power converters look to be the business, and a cheap way around the USA workshop problem. I'm surprised more people don't use them. Be sure to play around with different grinding mediums and techniques before you tackle anything expensive with the TPG. Cheers Rob

@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi Tim, Vibration is not a big issue, but it tingles when running, suggesting either armature out of balance slightly or it could be from 50 Hz pulsing. It's similar to what an angle grinder does and these are basically from the same family. There is no apparent looseness or runout in the bearings - all tight there. Cheers Rob

Thank you for the review! do you reckon this works well for stone carvings? considering what you mentioned about he high speed. I am quite a beginner and is looking for a decent tool that won't cost too much for my hobbies =)
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
Hi Saasha, I have not done any stone carving, so I can't accurately answer your question. I have however used the HILDA to grind/cut away steel plate and it did it easily. The tungsten burrs I used were very aggressive (8mm) and easily did the job. You are only using light pressure and the grinder stayed cool. How it would handle stone dust long term is a bit of a worry, but the same issue would apply with an angle grinder. For any heavier/bigger diameter grinding you would need a more powerful unit. I hope this helps. Cheers Rob

If it were 120volts I'd be interested. In the US we typically only have one or two 240 volt outlets. I've got them, but my extension cords for 240v are huge. I love the chuck though. It's the very thing that's kept me from buying these things. I found myself making collets when a chuck is what I wanted.

@davidcuster4618
@davidcuster4618 6 лет назад
Try Amazon for a converter. They have several 2000 watt units. Be sure to get one that only has a transformer in it. Transformers run "backwards" i.e., 120 to 240, just as well as 240 to 120. You may have to do some wiring, but that should be straightforward. Then you can use the 400 W Hilda and any other 240 V device up to 2000 watts.

I have a similar air tool which I used for many years before I got an electric die grinder. Air tools take much more punishment and won't overheat, so are favoured by industry. The downside is huge air consumption and noise. Both types of die grinders have their good and bad points and I use each as required. Cheers Rob

Hi Rob: Thank you for another positive report on another "cheap" Chinese tool. As you cab see, I share your sense of humor. By the way, 400 Watts equals 1/2 HP, with a 1/4" chuck is a powerful companion in the shop. I can't wait to see your tool post adapter. Cheers Jorge
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi Jorge, It's too hot to do much in the workshop at the moment, but it should be a pretty simple fabrication job, much the same design as for the pencil air die grinder. I will probably cut it out of heavy steel plate. I measured the alloy cylinder area at the chuck end (which I will clamp onto) and it was quite uniform for a casting - only 0.15 mm variation in diameter overall. So that's not too bad and better than an equivalent in plastic on a regular pistol grip drill. Years ago I did make a similar mount for a plastic bodied drill to allow cross drilling but there was so much flex in the plastic body that it was useless. I recycled the mount and deleted the video :) I did shoot a bit of footage sizing the current grinder to the lathe tool post to show how it would fit/work in, but didn't include it as the video was already quite long. Stay tuned. Cheers Rob
@jonbon1904

Hi Rob, do you reckon the chuck could be changed out for a keyless? I've changed some out on my older drills 'cause I'd be forever looking for or losing the chuck key, let alone losing knuckle skin when the key slips in the chuck :) Cheers, John
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi John, The maximum diameter chuck it can takes is 30 mm. Anything larger will not fit into the recessed nose. 3/8" keyless are 40 mm and will not fit. 1/4" keyless seem to be sold with an Sds mount but that unscrews and if the thread is the same it would fit. It may however be difficult to grip as the chuck body will mostly be in the recessed rotary tool nose. Cheers Rob

@Xynudu 4 года назад
Same thing. They are both really die grinders with no gearbox - direct drive. So torque will always be lower than an electric drill, but they spin faster (armature speed) and are great for grinding, burrs etc. This one is quite a lot more powerful than a Dremel and can take various sized accessories as it has a chuck and isn't restricted to collet size(s) like most rotary tools. Cheers Rob

Rob. Looks like a good unit but the advertises price wrong. The $38 price to Australia is ex US plus $26 postage. For a total of $64. @@Xynudu What about the bearings, are they more suitable? I honestly don't know what run out a Dremel has. But it is intended for some side pressure, when using some of the attachments. I could fit a keyed chuck to a Dremel with not too much work. Just don't know it its worth the trouble
@Xynudu
@Xynudu Год назад
I haven't had a Dremel apart, so I can't comment. As both units are primarily designed as die grinders, they will be able to handle significant side loads. The Hilda has a similar bearing size and setup to an electric drill. I expect runout to be very low on both units as per most die grinders. The Hilda will have much more torque than a Dremel due to the motor size.

@Xynudu
@Xynudu 5 лет назад
I only see the 400 watt Hilda being sold in Banggood. In fact I have one on order for my Brother in Law. It's currently on special for a short time. The unit does not drill really slow (so it's a bit fast for steel) as it is basically a high speed die grinder with a drill chuck. For wood this would be OK BUT at low speed you will lose power, that's how this variable speed works (it basically just reduces voltage). You could smoke the wood if you run it at higher speeds. I have drilled small diameter into wood with it without issue. The unit will only get hot if you run it slow with a big load on it. For grinding and cutting thin sheet metal with Dremel accessories it is fine and has way more power. I've never tried cutting wood with it, but it should be fine with small diameter blades/discs. The main thing is to not stall it or make it struggle. I mostly use 75 mm thin metal cutting discs in mine to cut bolts, rod, thin sheet steel. I use mine for Dremel type work and as a toolpost grinder on my metal lathe. It's a great unit for light loading work. Rob
