It turns out there’s more to hill climbing than just sitting down and twisting the throttle… In fact, I found it damn near impossible to keep my old YZ250 2 stroke driving hard the whole way up this ‘King of the Hill’ climb! You had to strike a perfect balance between power and grip, plus be ready to soak up any bumps that came your way… easier said than done.
My old Yamaha was on its last legs going into this one with close to 100hrs on the top end! And in stark contrast, Kynan had just bought his new Husqvarna TE250i, a latest-technology, fuel injected European 2 stroke. I honestly feel that it was him that deserved to make the final in the end, not me. It seemed like he had been doing a lot better, but I must have got lucky with the random number generator picking me weak competition the whole time.
After I left, Kynan was able to clear the road gap in his last ‘King of the Hill’ run! But still didn’t get that far up. And apparently Jared Guthrie, one of the better riders there on a 450 even made it all the way to the top!
