Friends & Love... A Chuck Mangione Concert
Chuck Mangione was invited to conduct a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra*
concert in May of 1970, and was given full rein of the affair. The result
is contained in this album - a concert which Chuck composed for a full
symphony orchestra and six superbly accomplished soloists, imaginatively
staged with special visual effects, and performed before a standing-room-only
crowd of over 3,500. This concert was videotaped by WXXI in Rochester, New York,
under grants from the Eastern Educational Television Network, the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting, and the R. T. French Co.
Mangione's music is strongly rooted in the jazz idiom, but he is reluctant
to categorize his compositions: " 'Friends & Love was a gathering of
musicians from a variety of backgrounds, each one of whom contributed
to the whole. When the music is honest and full of love, labels aren't
important and people will listen with an open mind".
Listen friends Out of hearts, confused by war
Take my hand and step outside Let answers show -
Let's look around - Let's all forgive -
Look ahead - And all begin to LIVE ...
And into ourselves ...
In our minds Listen friends
Let there be a peaceful glow Take one night and kiss the sky.
And call it love - Let's all be free -
Open up - Let's join hands -
And let it flow ... And feel LOVE ...

I am fortunate enough to have this magnificent recording on vinyl. I recall watching this with my dad on Channel 13 (PBS) in The Bronx around 1970 or 1971. A thrilling perfomance. Hey Itunes, you only have a 4 minute version of this on some 1971 reunion album. PLEASE issue this full version!

I was at this concert (actually there were several) at the Rochester Auditorium Theater back in the 70s. The acoustics are fantastic there. The recording doesn't do the song justice. The sound was so fat it just blew you back into your seat. I had goosebumps and the hair was standing up on the back of my neck. It was electric.

Been looking all over for this version. Thanx for posting. Grew up in Buffalo listening to this quasi local hero on the radio all the time and used to crank this on my car radio as I would practically convulse to the slow and steady crescendo at the end. He and Bat McGrath and other friends were around here in concerts for years. What a treat!

Gerry Niewood was in the Army reserve 98th division with my uncle. It really hurt when he was killed in that tragic plane crash over Buffalo years ago. Gerry was a blessing to the saxophone.

We started a college radio station at Southerstern State College in Durant OK in 1970 and this was a most requested album late nights. Good weed, cheap wine, a fine lady and Chuck. That was the booth, don't know what listeners were doing.

When this came out, I knew that I had to play music! The orchestration is so remarkable, the way that the unity of the song, makes you want to listen to what its saying to you. The mixture of the instruments both acoustic and electric, man, this song has "GENIUS" written all over it! Home town boy, does real good! (Bad grammer intended!)

We used to go skiing song mountain (tully ny - midnight maddness) and on the ride in, my roomy would time starting a tape of this tune such that as the final strains we played of the fanastic conclustion of this song faded away, we would roll to a stop at the base of the mountain.

Incredible piece of music! I first heard this on WSDM in Chicago in 1970. At that time WSDM was known as "The station with the girls", as women were rare on FM radio back then. Falconstrap, thank you for this!
