I'm Black, grew up in the hood, and this is relatable AF. Love my mom, but her alcoholism literally pushed her to dementia at just 52 years old. I joined the Marines in 1997 literally just to be out of my hometown. And I think it's easy to take either the good OR the bad of your upbringing and allow it to define you. There comes a point in time when you have to be honest about all of it...this movie looks like it'll do a great job of that. Can't wait.

@Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot I'd recommend reading the book too. It was riveting, horrifying, depressing but ultimately uplifting. Sounds like you had a tough upbringing but did good. Kudos to you. Well done. I was blessed....the 8th of 9 kids to parents who didn't have much but we were all loved and all raised with a strong work ethic. We weren't allowed too much downtime. Lots of chores and our Parents pushed education. They knew that education was the key to unlock a good future. It wasn't until I started working in a big city and heard from colleagues of their upbringing that I fully appreciated how wonderful my parents were and now in my 60s, I still miss them every day.

Hahahaha I love that you’re manu’s bald spot- and you are absolutely correct... right now I’m letting the bad from my childhood define me. I use to thrive on not being like my dad. I didn’t drink, I didn’t smoke, I went to college, I had a great job...and now I’m jobless, just home getting high..finding ways to leave my son with his dad.. I need to this movie, I’m so stuck.

I'm black and I attended college in Appalachia (Athens, Ohio) and spent a lot of time in Southeastern Ohio, eastern West Virginia, Western VA and Eastern TN-all in the heart of Appalachia. The movie was excellent and very reflective of what I saw and the people I met along the way in those areas. It was the first time I saw real American poverty. It was startling, to be honest. City poverty is very different from rural poverty.

I also went to Ohio University and saw one life on campus and in other places near by people were living entirely different lives. Grew up in Cincinnati and saw the same thing depending on which part of Greater Cincinnati you lived in. Since then I've lived all over the U.S. and it is the same everywhere. This is nothing new and it has actually become worse since when I lived there. Drug has now infected every state and are much worse now. The difference within a 10 mile radius can be alarming. I'm happy J.D. will be VP. He can help this country turn around.

I'm a city girl from a well-to-do part of Chicago, but I have been living in Appalachia for the past 3 years working as a therapist for abused children. I read the book Hillbilly Elegy last year. Here's my take: This book/movie is spot on and it's so sad. The drugs, the poverty, the unemployment, the lack of education, the junk scattered on the front lawns.. it's all true. The complacency is what's most baffling to me. High schoolers drop out of high school at alarming rates, pass that norm on to their children, draw checks their entire life despite being able-bodied. You wouldn't believe the amount of young people who are on disability around here. People around here move all the time, "staying" with friends and family without having a place to call their home. Because people are constantly "staying" places, children share beds and couches with uncles and various boyfriends of the mother. Sexual abuse to these children occurs due to lack of boundaries, and the kids grow up and become abusers themselves. The cycle continues. Unfortunately, there are few role models or programs to help stop the cycle. Those who have beat the odds and have done well in school move out of the area because of lack of jobs. Those who are left are the uneducated and unskilled who pass that along to their children. There are many from Appalachia who are upset at this movie, claiming it doesn't depict real Appalachian culture but rather paints it to be so negative. But like I said, it's spot on from what I've observed in my community and the families I serve as a therapist. So I wonder.. what's the truth? Am I wrong in what I'm observing since I lack the roots of being raised here? Or are they wrong because they are blind to their own faults and demise?

I am sure this is common now days. My family has two hundred years of history in Appalachia. Either none or very few match what is described. In the last thirty years I am sure even my relations have probably changed. It started with the government giving out welfare and food stamps. People quit growing their own food and working.

I was born in Point Pleasant, WV and grew up there and across the bridge in Gallipolis, OH. I'm telling you, his book is SPOT ON!! Of course, there are good things about Appalachia as well, but he focused on the parts that had the biggest impact on his upbringing, his life, his choices...and that was the dark side. The side he focuses on is very real and very disturbing. Some exist in denial and are offended by his story. I lived it. Every word he wrote hit so close to home for me. It was like ripping a page out of my own life. Hell, your comment hit close to home as well. I didn't get enough courage to leave until 10ish years ago. Now I live in New Albany, Ohio and my 2 teens were raised up here. Once my oldest started school...that scared me enough to move. The thought of him turning into me, or my mother, or my siblings was enough to wake me up. There are many good people in my hometown area, but very little opportunities. If you don't have a big last name or enough book smarts to become a doctor or lawyer, you have a good chance of working at Walmart or the power plant with little ambition for anything better. I wanted to open up my children's world and give them more than what I had. I grew up with 8 sisters and 2 brothers, many of us had the same mom but different dads or vice versa. My mom and many of my siblings were always in constant turmoil. On welfare, losing a job, moving, staying with someone else, borrowing money, on disability, without a car or job, on drugs, high school drop outs, etc. Complacent in their misery and poverty is the perfect way to put it. I was always ashamed of how poor we were, how dysfunctional my family was. Now, I'm grateful for my experience. I've learned so much from it. I ALMOST stayed stuck in that cycle. I was 27 before I broke out of it. I've tried to share my past with my kids and show/teach them the importance of mental/emotional/financial stability, financial and personal responsibility, how to be a contributing member of society and the importance of hard work/reaping what you sow. This is not to say that 100% of the population shares this experience. Not to say everyone there is poor, battling addiction or dysfunctional. But those topics DO affect a large majority in that area. Appalachian Culture has deep roots and it's a beautiful and interesting history in so many ways. This book doesn't paint the entirety of it in a bad light...it just paints a clear picture OF that bad light.

My dear beloved Appalachia is a hard place for many. I was fortunate to have two wonderful families. Both my Mother's and Father's families are salt of the earth folks with stability, longevity and a sense of obligation. Good people. It is sad to watch my neighbors struggle. But its also one of my greatest joys to watch some of these kids that you would never have guessed it, grow and become accomplished and sometimes very successful. But it is very rare 😢

There is a lot of research done on scapegoating mechanisms but there is little one can do to prevent it from happening. I do believe making victims aware that there is nothing wrong with them as helpful. Unfortunately scapegoating is often a way for families or communities to hide problems that they feel cannot face. In adulthood, scapegoating became a way for adult children to hide the fact of family history of abuse by blaming everything on one member who seemed vulnerable for attack (and/or talks about it). Often the scapegoat is targeted by the siblings who were treated more favorably. In that way, the less favored sibling(s) becomes the punchingbag for everything that is wrong in the family. Family therapy can help but only rarely are the culprits and less affected family members willing to take part. So my focus would be on empowering the family scapegoat(s).

This literally gave me chills. My wife bailed on our two kids and I almost 10yrs ago. Hasn't been around since. The behavior of Amy Adams character is a mirror image of the way my wife behaved. She bumped into my daughter recently at the local grocery store. I asked my daughter what it was it was like and she told me it was like bumping into an old friend from high-school and the conversation was, "hey, whatcha been up to?", "nice to see you" and thats it. Except, this is a mother we're talking about. It's not because they're bad people. It's a sickness. Some people are simply incapable of putting things of importance ahead of things that aren't.

@JamesHarris-hl2bm
@JamesHarris-hl2bm 3 года назад
What happens if you see other performances for Actress and Supporting Actress that you personally think are better? Part of this is luck, the actual part, and timing. Many things fell into place last year that made it clear Olivia Coleman would win. First, she had the role, playing a real life person and voters like that, second, she was replacing Clare Foy in The Crown, third, not only was the movie studio that released The Favourite behind her, Netflix spent a ton promoting her as well, fourth, this lady is amazing in interviews and extremely likable and that counts among voters, fifth, she was in a Best Picture nominee, six, although it means less these days, she won man of the major critics awards. She just came off more down to earth. Glenn is certainly well known and what many people do not know about her, she's from money. She is from wealth so she was never a struggling actress, so who knows what part that plays in it. However, let's wait and see what the early critics awards have to say: Let's see if Glenn can start that ball rolling. This role is so unlike Glenn. If this part is greater than the trailer and she can pick up say the NY Film Critics award for Best Supporting Actress, watch out, as the others like LA, Chicago, might follow suit. If that happens, she's a shoo in.

@d3nza482
@d3nza482 3 года назад
@@lolwuttup420 Why would that be an affront for him? A wife from a conservative patriarchal culture he and his pals see as subordinate is a perfect match for a guy who "jokes" about his care for national fertility rates. While also "joking" about being a "nationalist" I guess. "J.D. Vance@JDVance1 Nov 2 As a parent of young children and a nationalist who worries about America’s low fertility I can say with confidence that daylight savings time reduces fertility by at least 10 percent." A stereotype of an "obedient" Asian wife is a common fetish among white nationalists. So what if they have to accept a few more cognitive dissonances to make that work for them? As long as the hierarchy they build in their mind still has them as special snowflakes on the top of the pyramid... Asian baby-mama who starts and finishes every sentence with "Yes dear" is BY FAR better than the local race-traitor whores who date and marry blacks.

I am terrified this movie is going to be politicized. This is not a political movie. It’s a story of resilience. Amy Adams and Glenn Close give some of their best work in this movie. They both met with JD and he gave them access to archives, videos, clothes, etc. Both of them aren’t political people. Their performances should speak for themselves. They respected JD Vance enough to do research because if you see the actual photos and videos of his mom and grandmom and their mannerisms, they both nailed it.

The dysfunctional family, yet the struggle of one member to win the race. But many many scars that will last a lifetime. Beautiful movie. It made cry

This movie isn't an exaggeration of toxic and abusive family life. Trust me I lived a similar life to this. To watch it is to open up old wounds. Despite the abusive family I had. I've made something of my life. I'm pretty success and no one but the people who love me and know me truly. Understand somewhat of what I went through to get to were I am today. The acting was excellent from the entire cast.
