Hillclimb Monsters: Rod Millen's 850Hp Toyota Celica "Pikes Peak" VS ex-Georg Plasa BMW E36 Judd-V8

This video is dedicated to two iconic Hillclimb Monsters cars, Rod Millen's Toyota Celica GT Turbo 4wd "Pikes Peak" and the unforgettable ex-Georg Plasa BMW E36 powered by Judd-V8 engine. I wanted to make this virtual comparison between two of the most beautiful cars in the uphill racing speciality in the world that I had the pleasure of filming at the 2018 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. As we unfortunately know, the career of the Plasa driver died out in 2011 after a tragic accident in the 50th Bruno Carotti Cup Hillclimb held in Rieti, Italy. On that occasion, he was behind the wheel of another incredible car, the BMW 134 V8 JUDD. The owner of KW Suspensions, a great friend of Plasa, bought the car to preserve it but also thanks to the will of Georg's family it has been restored and brought back to its best shape and here you can see it in action with the excellent driver Jörg Weidinger who recorded an extraordinary time. Rod Millen and his monstrous Toyota Celica GT 4WD Turbo need no introduction. We remember, however, that in 1994 he set the record in the Pikes Peak race by setting the time of 10: 04.06 covering the 156 curves/hairpin bends and the total 20km of the route. This record lasted for 13 years, only beaten on July 21, 2007, by Nobuhiro Tajima driving the Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special which set a time of 10: 01.408. It must be said, however, that in the meantime part of the route has been paved. And it wasn't entirely unpaved like the one Millen faced. Questo video è dedicato a due iconiche vetture Hillclimb Monsters, la Toyota Celica GT Turbo 4wd "Pikes Peak" di Rod Millen e l'indimenticabile ex-Georg Plasa BMW E36 motorizzata Judd-V8. Ho voluto realizzare questo confronto virtale tra due delle più belle auto della specialità corse in salita a livello mondiale che ho avuto il piacere di filmare all'edizione 2018 del Goodwood Festival of Speed. Come purtroppo sappiamo la carriera del pilota Plasa si è spenta nel 2011 dopo un tragico incidente accorso nella cronoscalata 50° Coppa Bruno Carotti a Rieti, in Italia. In quell'occasione era al volante di un'altra sua incredibile vettura, la BMW 134 V8 JUDD. Il proprietario della KW Suspensions, grande amico di Plasa, acquitò la vettura con l'intento di preservarla ma anche grazie al volere della famiglia di Georg è stata restaurata e riportata alla sua forma migliore e qui la vedete in azione con l'ottimo pilota Jörg Weidinger che ha fatto registrare un tempo straordinario. Rod Millen e la sua mostruosa Toyota Celica GT 4WD Turbo dnon avrebbero bisogno di presentazione. Ricordiamo però che nel 1994 ha stabilito il record alla corsa in salita Pikes Peak segnando il tempo di 10:04.06 percorrendo le 156 curve/tornanti ed i 20km totali del percorso. Questo primato ha resistito per ben 13 anni, battuto solo il 21 Luglio 2007 da Nobuhiro Tajima alla guida della Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special che ha segnato un tempo 10:01.408, c'è da dire però che nel frattempo parte del percorso è stato asfaltato e non era interamente sterrato come quello che affrontò Millen. Those are 2 very angry cars. I love angry cars almost as much as I do angry motorcycles! Nothing feels as good between your legs as a really pissed off motorcycle!

Friends motorcyclists who have mighty two-wheeled vehicles have confirmed your statement to me 👍 Having said that, the two cars you see in my opinion are two of the best exponents in the world in the field of Hillclimb racing, after them, only the prototypes Barchetta, the ultimate and most extreme level of these cars.

@@upsidedowndog1256 Unfortunately, I'm not a motorcyclist, apart from the fact that I own a Vespa and I used it when I was very young. Who knows, maybe one day I'll want to buy a motorcycle 😉

It's not an easy comparison; they are two wonderful high-speed cars. Certainly, that Judd-V8 engine is a real gem. Moreover, this ex-Plasa BMW was the real watershed of Hillclimb cars. It set the standard of construction and design so high that everyone else had to admire and study to develop something similar.

@@Italiansupercarvideo Very much agreed and let's not forget it took over a decade for some records that were set by this legendary BMW to be beaten while some still remain.Not only car set high standard in terms of performance and preparation,but Plasa set driving standards real high as well.

@@BAYBOSSMAN So,Toyota won race held once a year and Plasa's BMW is multiple european champion and still holds records on some tracks while for those that got broken took nearly a decade and half and it ended 2 seconds faster in the end?I'd choose this BMW over Celica any day and by the way,Pikes Peak is overrated.

@@hillclimbracingfan5821 Yes, I mistakenly forgot to write that Plasa, driving his car, has raised the pilot-car duo's performance a lot. He remains an unforgettable great champion; all this would not have been possible without him. He left an important legacy in Hillclimb racing 👍
