Hilleberg Niak vs. Nallo 2 GT/Anjan 2 GT 

Hi! Nice review of the tents. I live in Norway and have several Hilleberg tents that I have used a lot since I bought the first one in 1995. I have Niak and nallo(without GT), Soulo and Akto which all are suitable for a man going alone. When I'm out with my girlfriend and her dog we usually choose a bigger 3 persontent with GT as the Kaitum3GT. Most of my trips I have been alone, maybe for up to 3-4 weeks with a lot of fishing and moving around in the mountains. As I've gotten older(50+) I prefer the Nallo over the other one-person-tents because of the extra space in the vestibule. It's the same weight as Soulo at 2.4kg's but has a lot more room both inside and in the vestibule, and even better ventilation, higher comfort. Soulo was really a mistake buying I think because I can't really find the use for it. It's more like a bombproof wintertent but in winter i prefer bigger models. In Nallo in bad weather you can comfortably store a big backpack and fry fish in the vestibule, cook coffe and so on which is a lot trickier in Niak for sure. And thats not even the GT-version Nallo2. In very bad weather Niak is not so comfortable. Regarding Akto that was my first choice on all trips from 1995 to 2008, but the space inside is really small with gear inside and low over your head, the vestibule on the other hand is a little better in Akto than in Niak and Soulo.Never use Akto anymore in bad weather, heavy rain for a week inside there is not fun. The little added weight of Nallo is worth it for me!

Hi, I like Your type of review - practical value, not bickering about a few ounces... Hilleberg used to have another line for the tunneltents, they called it EX, like Nammatj EX and that meant that you would have a big zipper close to the front pole all along the entire pole and you could remove the vestibule and zip in the GT part. That made the Nammatj the perfect tent for me: good for one person all 4 seasons (even in summer, because you could remove the vestibule completely and have perfect ventilation) - and with the GT it was a very spacious two person tent even in winter (which is 6 month of the year in northern Norway, where I used to live). Of course that would mean 2 or 300 gramms more to carry, because of the zipper. Well, they are just not made anymore... and after 15 years of use mine got retired - by a rift in the fly. Now I use a Suolo, because I am kayaking most of my outdoor time and I like that the tent is stable against wind from all directions AND big plus: I can move it around until I find the right spot. Very little space - true, but I got used to it. For summer time and hiking I am thinking about a Niak or an Anjan 2 - that's why I came here...

Nice review. Well done. One hint regarding the missing space / vestibule with the Niak: You can easily build a big vestibule with an additional tarp to the Niak, for instance with the Hilleberg Tapr 5 or some other, even lighter Tarp (e. g. the Nordisk Voss 5 ULW Tarp or the Bach Tarp Poncho). Then you have a perfect, easy to pitch, and very comfy tent for one person with enough space for all your gear and space for cooking when it is raining all day long. (ok, you do mention this at the end of your video).

The niaks material doesn't touch the ground like hillibergs 4 season tents do. It is curved which allows breeze to flow under. So it's better in summer for sure ! Also the front door is mesh only..there is NO inbuilt zipped (yellow) screen. So the outer fly is basically your solid screen. So yes..there is a lot more air getting thru..probably not a good tent when it's really cold perhaps or if you don't want snow getting in under the outer fly

Always nice to see honest and unbiased review or overview, call it whatever. Point being opinion of someone, who's not trying to sell it to you. Personally I would never sleep in one tent with another dude unless it's a survival situation. That being said having some extra space is always a plus in case someone you're willing to share this tent with wants to join you. If you know what I mean. :D

Like you say, these are all excellent tents, but really comes down to your intended purpose and body size (as well as a few other things). Thanks and keep up the great work!

Excellent review! (Using Niak, Unna, Soulo and Allak 2 my self. The Allak 2 for winter camping solo when I pull a "pulk" (sledge))

90% of 2 person tents are 1 person livable. But Fjällräven and Hilleberg are the best tents of the market IMHO! :) Nice vid!

Pretty happy with my Akto, but all the vestibule options on the several models you reviewed and mentioned, I see an upgrade in my future, hopefully Santa's paying attention.... EXCELLENT review

Hey man. Nice commentary on the Niak. I nearly bought one but opted for the Rogen. 2 huge vestibules with a porch area created by the small cross pole give more versatility for me. Only a 400g weight penalty. But then I live in UK so it’s a very rainy climate. Still like the simplicity of the Niak tho 👍

what you didn't talk about is 2 things: 1) hilleberg tents can be set up as inner tent option only for summer/hot weather camping. Optional pole holders are required. 2) ventilation: Anjan 2 and also Nallo has incredible pitching variants. you can put up whole rear of the tent exposing the inner tent. you can put up front completely/ don't forget many variations with doors... I do love self standing. I have Staika, Anjan 2 and Nallo 2 GT, but want Niak or Unna

Thank you for the good and thorough review! I liked that you both gave your height and weight. I myself am more your size and sometimes I find it really annoying when (the only assumption you can make when you watch a random video!) someone 4/5 my height and half my weight reviews camping gears, tents, hammocks, kayaks, etc. It doesn't matter what is promised in advertisements, shown in schematics or told as an upper limit, the actual dimensions and usability of the products are completely different for people 160cm/60kg or 185/98kg.

Great video but I just gotta comment that if you are in conditions that pull out the 4 main stakes and all the guyline stakes on a Nallo or Anjan, odds are very high that your Niak is going to be flattened too. Tie off the guylines on some of those willows and they are not going anywhere. With any tent in severe conditions you need to go to the extra effort to find some big rocks and pile them on the stakes, tie the guylines off to trees, etc ...

Hilleberg labels the Niak as an 1.5 person tent. Perfect for an adult and a child or a dog. It is room enough for two mattresses side by side for two persons who wants to go very light. The Unna, which is a 4 season and basically has the same construction as the Niak, except the vestibule, is labeled as a 1 person tent. Thanks for sharing 👍

I like video, thought it have provoking logical mismatch compares Niak as one person tent (it’s just small 2p) to Nallo (substituted for Anjan) with GT as two person tent. I would stress to get back to basics - Niak vs. Anjan (without GT): Anjan is slighly heavier but noticably LARGER both in sleeping area (it still 2p ofcourse) and vestibule (even without GT). As for GT, yes it’s great for base camp.

Important note: there is a large difference between the Anjan and Nallo in terms of weight. The Anjan 2 (non-GT) weighs approx. the same as the Niak (numbers from the Hilleberg website), but the vestibule is much larger and easily fits two large backpacks. The only reason why I would buy the Niak (over the Anjan 2 that I currently own) is that the Niak is (almost) freestanding. And reasons to buy the (non-GT) Anjan 2? Same weight as the Niak, more storage area, and lots of ventilation options for hot summer nights. EDIT based on the comments below, I would summarize the pros (my opinion!) of both tents like this: *Anjan 2* (non-GT): more storage area, more ventilation options. *Niak* : smaller footprint, (almost) freestanding, more headroom, side entrance.

I always understood the Niak to be the ideal one adult and a child, or an adult and a pet tent. Hoping to get a Niak any day now for myself and my 5 year old son.

I used to sell those (before the Niak came out though) but couldn't afford them. Now a more boring job brings in enough money to buy them, but can't try them out IRL. I've just been looking to replace a worn out MSR for trips with my young daughter, and I'm so satisfied with my Akto I can't even consider anything else than Hilleberg. I was just hesitating between Niak and Nallo 2 (non GT). Your comparison was unexpected and very helpful. Do you reckon the Niak remains large enough for an adult (I'm 6'2) and a small child, given that my trips tend to be everyday mobile and that sleeping comfort is more important to me than overall live-around comfort ?
