Hello, and Thanks for another swamp-related video, my friend... - I look forward to watching it very shortly, and I somewhat recently watched that video when you walked in to that really muddy swamp, and you were sinking a bit, and it is one of my favorite videos of yours. Especially when you discuss your hopes of being able find your way back the way that you waled in. I have experienced many types of mud when hiking, and it can be very unpredictable in some areas at some times. I should mention that I found it to be very helpful to have a hiking staff, especially in very remote areas. Even in places less than a mile from my home, over the decades I found that in some situations there is mud that can be very difficult to remove your feet from, depending on your weight, even without a pack (that can be removed), as there is nothing in some cases to grab onto to pull yourself out. I have never experienced sinking when even temporarily a bit "stuck in the mod", but I was parked near a small lake or pond with someone back in my late teens, and we heard an occasional strange and very brief bubbling type sound a few times. When we were about to drive off, I noticed that my car would not move for some reason. I decided it was best to go outside to take a look at what was going on. Well, much to my surprise, the car door would not open, and that sure raised the level of surprise to say the least. My girlfriend at the time was unable to open the passenger side door either. I rolled down the window, and found that the car had sunk enough that the bottom of the doors were in the mud. This was not a very secluded area by the way, just off of a road close to the water line. This was a long time before cellphones, and I had no CB radio at that time either. Within an hour or so, a Jeep Renegade was passing by, and I beeped the horn, and waved to flag them down. They began to laugh as they noticed what had transpired, and somewhat easily pulled the car out of the mud and we were on our way. Anyway, a "thumbs up" would be appreciated if you lied reading this, and it will be helpful when I check back to gauge the interest level among this somewhat unique community. It has been quite a while since I posted in the comment section to these videos. Thank You, _John_

Great show Dave and Nick. Thank you. This is a great idea. I dont know how many times we expected or started with a dry camp area and mother nature said nāy-nāy. A tarp over the top is always nice, but being elevated like you show here is way nicer. Dry sleeping bag = happy camper. 🙂

You did really good with nothing touching the ground until you threw the rope on the ground lol. I love your ideas and the fact that you and nick are so entertaining. Nick always giving you crap and you not getting upset with him or whatever thing may be giving you a problem. I can tell right now this shelter will not work for me with all the troubles it’s giving you just because of the fact that I only have use of one arm and hand due to a farming accident 13 years ago. It is amazing how well a person can figure out how to do things one handed. Like starting a fire with a ferro rod deploying a ridge line tying knots and all sorts of things I have often thought that I should start a channel of my own showing how I have adapted ideas of others or have came up with my own ways of doing bushcraft and just everyday ways of doing things one handed. If you have ideas of how a person might do some things to help others like me please share. I would much appreciate it and I’m sure others would as well. Thanks Dave and Nick. Keep up the good work. Great ideas for the gear cradle and raised shelter. Looks like a lot less work using the webbing instead of all that rope on your older shelter. Take care guys, great video. 👍🏻

I have a duffel bag that I should be able to adapt to a gear cradle. Thanks for the idea. You might want to try a trucker's hitch on each side of the tree to tighten up each side of the webbing. Starting with the webbing and the tarp higher on the trees would help a lot. Using a couple carabiners on each tightening webbing strap and using them as pulleys would help also. I'm being paged for dinner now. More comments after I watch the last of the video. Always interesting videos, new and different concepts and good advice. All in all a great video.

It's always cool watching a smart dude trying a unique shelter! I think I would try cam buckles for simplicity and then only resort to using a single ratchet strap if that didn't work. You're only going to get so much stretch out of a tarp. If it doesn't work with one ratchet strap I would guess it's probably not going to work regardless of tensile load.

Thanks Dave for the thread tip. Love the concept, was thinking to simplify set up, if the webbing was sewed to the fabric and just have 3 heavy d-rings on each corner. You could even sew the top to the bottom and have a triangular tent hammock by sewing loops a few feet inside the edge of the top and paracording those higher up the trees. Great ingenuity again!

instead of ratchet straps.....tie a rope onto the corner you want to stretch, then do a truckers hitch on the tree behind your anker tree. then you have free hands to make what adjustments are needed. then take truckers hitch down and repeat the process on other corners. great video, can't wait for the next one.

Oh, my goodness! What an amount of ropes, bungees, daisy chain, tapes, net, knots and carabiners, just to create this triangle thing..! Happy eastern, boys!

Hey Dave and nick, luv you guys. I carry a small lightweight hammock to use as a gear cradle slash chair. I set it up near my shelter. Also an added benefit is because I camp alone if someone stumbles on my sight it seems there are two people because of the hammock and tarp. It's like a decoy setup, they see that and I see them before they see me.

For super light weight and zero stretch look into mule tape! It's what I use for my hammock set up. Love you guys!

I always enjoy the videos where you have created a new, elaborate piece of gear, or set up. I have gotten a few good ideas from you over the years. that being said, I got a real chuckle out of you talking about how big that tree is. I live about 300 miles north of San Francisco , very near the redwoods forest. I used to live down in the forest. it is not uncommon to see trees with a 15'+ diameter, so nearly 50 feet in circumference. tell Nick your kinda rambling videos with genuine banter and odd camera angles are not costing viewers, they are part of why we are here . Watching this does remind me of the years I was in the ARMY, I spent some time on Ft Benning with a lot of time in the woods. some of the hardest, but best time out of the 10 years I was in.

Tag the ends of your webbing with a different colors....make it easier to find ends. You could also make the ends with a buckle included, like a climbing belt. Then you could adjust or tighten the strap . Not sure if im explaining right.

My suggestion would be is to mark the ends of your webbing. Maybe you could sew some brown cloth on the ends. Don't forget, someone is going to have to carry the bar-be-que grill too. Hahaha.

Hey Dave hope you guys are doing well. Wanted to update you on the big cat population in our area. I dont care what wildlife management says i know what I saw! I was on lookout mountain on 35 close to the Geordia line last night and I saw a deer about to shoot across the road in front of my vehicle so I slowed down not to hit it. But when it got in the road in front of my truck it wasnt a deer. It was a black panther that i guess was at least 200 pound cat! Ive never seen a cat that large in my whole life. That changes things for me when it comes to camping and tromping. I wont be alone from now on!

Since you asked for advice, I will suggest that you add more cross webbing straps to reduce the large spaces giving more rigidity to the supporting structure, which will give much better support for multiple people.

hey David, nice to see a video. its raining over here in SC. so its a tri-hammock. i say get a 20x24 tarp, have one side drop over one side of the triangle, then the other side of the tarp connect to the tree in its middle leaving two corners dropping as sides for the other sides of the triangle. like a 3 side taco. as you say, clear as mud. maybe i should make one and send you a video. (say no, you understand my description)

I love all of you ideas and inventions but I will stick to my hammock. Onewind makes a gear hammock that you can set up under your hammock so you can reach your gear as you lay in your hammock. Nick You are Not losing this viewer
