Ivan the Intrepid Google maps hasn’t updated the satellite view but the new lava has extended the coast about a mile further into the ocean...

Ivan the Intrepid I just came back and the economy there is really hurting because the media made it look like doomsday is coming to the Big Island... If people only knew how beautiful evening still is...

Update, that lava flow created approximately 50 brand new secluded black sand beaches!! My house is about 4 or 5 miles away from fissure #8 craziest, most stressful event of my life.

Hey Fonsi! We drove to Mauna Kea no problem and there is an observatory along the way. The gift shop had telescopes out but I don't know what their schedule is. As for the BIG observatories I am not sure if they allow people to use them or not. Hey! So my living situation was different since I was staying at a friends who was building a treehouse. If you want to keep it cheap then check out AirBnB and hostels, or just google campgrounds on the big island. Renting a car is probably a must unless you are staying for a long time and can hitchhike. There are some public buses but I don't know how extensive their networks are. THanks for the compliment! I shot all of this with a Sony NEX 5T. Great little mirrorless camera with an exchangeable lens. Have a great trip! The island is amazing.

Hey Sonny! There are so many incredible things to do! If you have time and will be on the Hilo side then I would say these places in the video are a great start. If you get over to Kona you can live one of my dreams and go snorkeling with the 9ft manta rays at night... it is supposed to be pretty incredible. Have fun!

Hey! I most certainly didn't pay for a tour haha. And I don't think you should either. Will you be renting a car to get around the Big Island? You can easily drive up yourself and investigate things as you go. I'm not sure if buses run up there but hitchhiking is always an option and is quite common on the island.

It's hard to say because it wasn't a typical trip. My friend flew me over to help film a video for her tree house and so I slept under that for two weeks before heading to two other islands. If you are flexible I think you could do it for pretty cheap especially on the big island.

Mike Christiaan I travel too much to call any one place home. but home base is where the family is in Boise. I may eventually buy a little spot to build on on the big island though!
