Disaster in Himachal Pradesh: Torrential rains and landslides claim 91 lives
From June 24 to July 14, more than 110 landslides and floods occurred. The main cause of the damage is that migrant workers, ignorant of the local weather conditions and geology, built cement and brick buildings without restraint in the area.
Himachal Pradesh has seen a tragic incident in the past 48 hours as torrential rains triggered a devastating landslide that killed 51 people, according to the state government. Unfortunately, that number is expected to increase as many more people may be trapped under the rubble. There have been worrying reports of casualties and property damage in the Shimla, Solan and Mandi areas. Especially in the capital Shimla, on the morning of August 14, 2023, nine bodies were found after a landslide hit a Shiva temple in the Summerhill area.
IMD Deputy Director Bui Lal today issued Orange Alert for Kangra, Mandi and Shimla districts and Yellow Alert for other parts of Himachal Pradesh. In the next 48 hours, there may be rainfall in many parts of Himachal Pradesh. Amber alert will be issued for Bilaspur, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kangra and Chamba tomorrow. Parts of the state are still likely to see rain, although the precipitation is likely to subside after August 16.
