The Himalayas (also Himalaya) (Sanskrit: हिमालय, himālaya, from hima 'snow' and alaya 'place, residence'; pronounced in German [hiˈmaːlaɪ̯a] or [himaˈlaɪ̯a]) is a high mountain system in Asia. It is the highest mountain range on earth and lies between the Indian subcontinent in the south and the Tibetan plateau in the north. The boundaries in the west and east are not geologically based and are therefore drawn differently. The mountain range stretches at least 2,500 kilometers from Pakistan to the Indian-Chinese border area in Arunachal Pradesh and reaches a width of up to 330 kilometers. The Himalayas are home to ten of the world's fourteen mountains, whose peaks are more than 8,000 meters high (“eight-thousanders”), including Mount Everest, which rises to 8,848 m above sea level. d. Der Himalaya (auch Himalaja) (Sanskrit: हिमालय, himālaya, von hima ‚Schnee‘ und alaya ‚Ort, Wohnsitz‘; deutsch [hiˈmaːlaɪ̯a] oder [himaˈlaɪ̯a] ausgesprochen) ist ein Hochgebirgssystem in Asien. Es ist das höchste Gebirge der Erde und liegt zwischen dem indischen Subkontinent im Süden und dem Tibetischen Hochland im Norden. Die Begrenzungen im Westen und Osten sind nicht geologisch begründet und werden daher unterschiedlich gezogen. Das Gebirge erstreckt sich auf einer Länge von mindestens 2500 Kilometern von Pakistan bis zum indisch-chinesischen Grenzgebiet in Arunachal Pradesh und erreicht eine Breite von bis zu 330 Kilometern. Im Himalaya befinden sich zehn der vierzehn Berge der Erde, deren Gipfel mehr als 8000 Meter hoch sind („Achttausender“), darunter der Mount Everest, der mit 8848 m ü. d. Meer höchste Berg der Erde.
