Hindemith: «Mathis der Maler» (Matías el pintor) - Sinfónica de Galicia - S. Kochanovsky, director 

So here I am, bingeing on RU-vid Mathis performances, and I see Sinfónica de Galicia. "Hmm, Spanish provincial orchestra playing Hindemith, this might be okay . . ." and it's marvelous! Better than most commercial recordings, with some surprisingly good touches. The sighing string figures right before the concluding flute/horn duet in the Grablegung movement, for instance, are unequaled by any performance I've heard, and only Hindemith's own performances of the whipsaw rubato lines at the beginning of the Versuchung movement snarl the way Kochanovsky's does. Oh, and the orchestra is superb. Might have to subscribe to this channel!

A very good rendition with great quality of every solist and fantasticaly blended sound. I had to turn down the volume down a couple of times so as not to get deaf but every note still sounded in check. The work itself is fun to hear, with that strange mix of the very classic structures articulated in new forms and keys.

Even without Dima, this orchestra continues as one of the world's finest. Bravo!!

I've known and loved Hindemith's music for years but have never heard this score live in concert save here. And I'd never heard of S. Kochanovsky before who gets clear, tight, rhythmically supple and dramatic results from this great orchestra. Hindemith was frequently dissed in his lifetime for just being himself. Check out a full concert of him leading the Chicago Sym in a concert of his work www.youtube.com. Amazing...
