Hope Sitara gets inducted when it finally completes testing. With HTT40, Sitara and Tejas Trainer, all stages of training can be done on 100% indigenous platforms.

Can't Kaveri engine be used for these trainers which don't need high performance demand of combat operations.

@@BomberFury NPO Saturn engine has these specs Length: 1,950 mm Diameter: 590 mm Dry weight: 315 kg Max thrust: 17.3 kN Kaveri engine Length: 3,490.0 mm Diameter: 909.3 mm Dry weight: 1,236 kg Max thrust : 52 kN Kaveri is too big and powerful, need to make mini kaveri version, which would take 2-3 years for flight certification and testing.

@@jkz3068 1/3rd size Kaveri should be able to do job. It will still take years for flight certification and testing.

The HJT-36 was designed and manufactured in Russia in 1997 and has not yet been used. It's not complete and is unlikely to be introduced by the Indian Air Force.

Very good overview of IAF's trainer a/c, often ignored when talking about the more sophisticated and glamorous sisters. Looks nice too in vibrant colors though the side intakes look as if they were added as an after thought. 🙂 Wonder why we did not think of Kaveri engine for the IJT.

20 yrs,... HAL sort of need this lead time to complete any new project?.... Be it turboprop to jets... this Sitara IJT case, ... after failing the spin test and not able to find the cause, ....HAL had to consult outside experts,...who advised them to extend the tail end and that's it.... the ego is the reason for the delay....

India has the capability to produce trainer and fighter aircrafts on its own, there are no shortages of talent, technical knowhow and materials, but there is a lot of political and bureaucratic hurdles, for whatever reasons, and in my view this will be in play for a long time to come, until this is sorted out India will still rely on other countries for various parts.

Hl42 is even better as it comes with better avionics for trainers.
