I'm a very recent subscriber. I like the less "in-your-face" style, John. This was very informative. I also watched the video of making the strap hinge, too. I do have a question about the bolt/screw holes in the strap. I see you only formed two holes on the long strap nearer the finial. Is that enough for a large wooden gate? Would the weight of the gate eventually pull down on the side?
Hello John...thanks again for a great video...A quick question...I take it that you source commercially available square nuts and fire them to match the pintel, rather than tapping from scratch
You are correct. McMaster Carr used t carry unplated square nuts, but now they only carry then plated. I am about to upload a video describing how I deal with commercial fasteners to make them compliment the iron work.
When I build my new cabin this summer, I want to make a heavy front door out of solid wood with long forged hinges that come across the door. I haven't decided on 2 or 3 hinges yet. If you don't mind me asking, how thick do you think they would need to be to carry the weight? When I was young, we had what I believe was a 2.5" thick solid oak front door with black iron looking hinges like described above, and I loved the look of it.
I think it has more to do with how well they are fastened to the door than a given thickness. Old forged hinges were often quite thin. However I like a strap of 1/4" x 1 1/2" for heavier doors and have never had anyone report a problem
Thank you. I was thinking along the lines of 1/4" also. Now I just need to decide on the overall look of the hinge. Maybe something medieval looking that would compliment a dragon door knocker. 🤔😉
