White and nerdy and all about the pentiums are his best raps And then he does a couple of michael jackson parodies likeEat it And I'm fat He does exactly like the video
Al never legally had to get permission to parody a song, but he had the courtesy not to do a parody without permission. The Coolio incident was a mix-up. Al thought he had Coolio's permission when his manager gave it. Nobody "sold" him rights to the original song. Making a parody requires no rights to the original work.
Yup. While there were fewer options when this was made, I still admire the willingness to put in the effort to go "practical". It's like shooting "Tacky" in one take.
If you want to be blown away by Weird Al's "flow", react to "Hardware Store". Or watch the Epic Rap Battles episode of "Sir Isaac Newton vrs Bill Nye".
Wierd Al generally gets permission before he does a parody although it isn't legally required. In this case there was a miscommunication. Weird Al thought he had permission although he hadn't. It was a case of my people talked to your people. Coolio was upset but they have buried the hatchet. You should watch The Saga Continues, Tacky (based on Happy), Fat and Eat It based on Michael Jackson's Bad and Beat It. For Fat Jackson lent Al the set he used for Bad
I'm pretty sure that since that and the Lady Gaga thing, Weird Al doesn't do the 'my people talk to your people' thing when he wants to parody a song, and just talks to the artist in person.
Between COVID and the biopic movie project, he had something of a long break between new song releases, but then about a week ago he released a new one. It's one of his polka medleys, but I'm hoping maybe it'll be just the first track for a new EP or album. We'll see.
What's ironic is by the time he did this song he was a household name but Coolio hated it when it initially came out only to rewatch it and Coolio actually liked it. For your next weird AL song White and Nerdy
The funny thing about Weird Al, other than, y'know, being freaking hilarious, is that he kind of comes and goes in waves. Like he'll release an album, and everyone will be like "ohh yeah, he's that funny guy that sometimes sings those funny parody songs," and then kinda' forget about him until his next album comes out. He once joked that his entire career is "like one long come-back tour / revival." ;)
And yeah, when this song came out there was definitely a kerfuffle with Coolio, who was like "don't come after me and my music," and Weird Al was like, "Sorry, bro, I legit thought I had your permission." Sounds like maybe the studio had said yes and cleared the rights to use the music itself for the parody, but hadn't actually run it by Coolio first, or something, to make sure he was okay with the parody itself. They did eventually bury the hatchet and make up, at some point, I believe... Probably after many phone calls and much groveling by Weird Al Yankovic... ;)
Most people don't realize that the part where he sings "no phones, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury" is from the theme song for Gilligan's Island
The original song was "Pastime Paradise" by Stevie Wonder released in 1976 on the "Songs In The Key Of Life" album. So Coolio would have had to request or buy the rights from either Stevie Wonder or his label to make "Gangster's Paradise" as it was fark (an existing melody with new lyrics) and not parody. Weird Al does not have to ever get permission to make his parody songs as parody is a defense against copyright infringement but to his credit he always tries to honor the wishes of the original artist. It is likely that since Stevie Wonder was the original creator of the song there was some sort of mixup and Weird Al received consent from Stevie Wonder's label that owned the rights and Coolio got salty about it because he wasn't consulted on the matter. He probably felt he should have been consulted since Gangster's Paradise was such a big hit but truth be told it wasn't ever really his song. His words and his mix for sure but Stevie Wonder's song.
4:08 he wasn’t roasting Coolio, he actually wore the same cut as Coolio at a show lmao (the bacteria looking one) Coolio wasn’t happy about it but he came around to it
yea alot of people dont realise he is quite intelligent. its kind of like charlie chaplin. like if someone looked up a real pic of chaplin. ( chaplin also did the piano notes for the song " smile " which later words were added to... because you know... silent movie era.. ) . they just decided best way to make some cash and make the world happy was by doing stuff like this.
I can be your Weird Al sensei. By the way, contrary to popular belief, Coolio didn't get angry at Al. His publicist messed up and said that Coolio wasn't good with it. You should watch The Saga Begins if you are a Star Wars fan and even if you aren't. If you want to hear something better than Rap God, watch Hardware Store with the lyrics. It's absolutely insane. You can go down a very big rabbit hole. You know that he came out with a new video on Friday, right?
@@legionaireb Exactly. Coolio had no idea what was going on and hadn't really bothered listening to the song. It was until much later when he actually spend time listening to it that he was okay with it and he admitted his response was out of order.
@@MGower4465 Some apparent backstory here. I found this from 3 different sources but copied this quote from reddit user srystorm: The backstory is that Al asked for permission and got it, but found out much later that the request never made it all the way to Coolio (as Al had assumed).
The Amish are very intelligent and tough. They can survive when technology isn't working. They work hard. Far from stupid. They pay taxes, insurance. They will fight back if they need to fight. They do own guns, very good shots. Leave a message if you want to know more.
😂 So wrong yet he is so good at it ❤ I cant see the Amish being impressed but the upside is that they have no television or social media so they really wouldnt have to suffer hearing it ever 😅😂😂
Weird Al got several things about the Amish way off. They do not have electricity or modern conveniences, they are not shy about using yours or if the job needs them, they will use them. I know Amish who use power tools, phones and other modern things if it's necessary. I also know Amish that have phones.
