The beginning "UK garage drums" is actually Craig Jones the Sampler. The part where the bass kicks in is where Joey also comes in. That's why you hear the layered percussion. Joey's drums come in on top of Craig's sample in the mix. It's a brilliantly designed intro.

Yes. It is a sample of "Ease Yourself" by The Collective, which is a beautiful DNB/Jungle track from the UK edm scene in the 90s (iirc). Craig Jones and Sid Wilson are often overlooked, as they're not upfront, and easily accessible to even see what they're doing. But they very much are as important to the band's sound (especially the self titled album, where it seems to be the most visible imo) and overall creativity.

I was at a festival in the late 90s to see Primus, System of a Down, Tree and Machine Head. These guys opened their set with this song. Their 1st album had just dropped a week or two prior and no one had ever heard of them. This song, LIVE, was my introduction to Slipknot. Still my favorite.

Joey was an absolute god on drums and there are live shows you absolutely need to see where he's got the raised drum set that light goes sideways and spins around. It's fûcking insane. I am still crushed by his loss. He was the only member of the band I ever got to know in any way. Slipknot mixess samples and media and then there are three drum sets technically. There's one more traditional drum set in the back and then there are two guys who beat on kegs and metal drums with black drumsticks and sometimes metal pipes on either side of the stage in front. With the kegs and metal pipes it technically falls under the umbrella of industrial/industrial metal and that's where my heart is. I know Sean's/Clown's drum set used to be on a scissor jack so it would occasionally raise and fall throughout the set.

Marlon Brando had a wild, tumultuous life that saw as much bad as it did good. He saw success and pain, love, fame, and ugliness as well. The meaning behind the title is you can’t really see or know California without having experienced the range of experiences it can provide. Corey was very raw with these lyrics, in particular regarding his father and how similar they were (addiction and struggles). This song is definitely a banger.

Molly, in the early 1990's there was a new genre of music called Digital Hardcore. In the UK/Germany, the two biggest names were Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire. In the USA, we had The Shizit. This genre is a mixture of Garage/Drum'n'Bass/Jungle/Gabber/breakcore mixed with hardcore/punk/metal. Some notable songs to check out: The Shizit - Herdcore The Shizit - Spit AK The Shizit - Point Click Kill

I think the best interpretation of that “Marlon Brando” line is that you can’t appreciate the glitz and glam of something without understanding the filth and decay that sits underneath. For example: Hollywood. “Look me in my brand new eye” means they are starting to see it for themselves. The majority of the music was composed by Joey, Paul and Shawn: the original three members of the band, typically speaking an album with those three on it was quintessential Slipknot. Sadly both Paul and Joey passed away so their sound has never quite been the same. The best way I can describe the first album is “exhausting” that feeling of wanting to get up and smash something, happens with almost every song on the album and each song feeds right into the next almost non-stop. At the end you are completely destroyed from listening to it.
