In Finland we have this thing called Metal Music...

Wintersun is unbelievable. Jari Maenpaa is the main songwriter and lead vocalist. His songwriting skills are absolutely unbelievable. Kai Hahto is their drummer in most of their stuff. He's currently supporting Nightwish on their album and tour, due to normal Nightwish drummer Juuka Nevalainen taking a hiatus brought about by insomnia. The band members are incredible, their musicianship is off the charts. This song and band are near the top of my list. I saw them live recently with Ne Obliviscaris and Sarah Longfield. They mean the world to me because metal shows are sometimes the only way I get to see some of my friends i've known the longest, because life gets busy. They're the friends that introduced me to these bands, to this world of metal so many many years ago. Bands like Amorphis, Wintersun, Ne Obliviscaris, Omnium Gatherum, etc.

Hey Alex, I'm starting to really like your channel. You've chosen music I've spent almost my entire life listening to, and it feels wonderful for someone, who identifies as a hip-hop head, to appreciate it. As for Wintersun and this song, the band is widely known for the fact, that they don't sample music or even edit it too much, so what you hear is actually what they do, not fake or anything; just pure talent and results of unbelievably hard work. As for the band and the song: I think the best place and time to listen to this song is a wintery night, alone under the stars - it makes one fill with amazement and awe. What this song represents to me, is divided in few mixed emotions. First, I believe it even has a concrete meaning; winters are hard here in the north, but with that comes the fact, that they are also beautiful. Being from the same country as the band, I think I can somehow relate to this. Secondly, I do believe, that the song seeks to describe inner struggles; either conquering them or succumbing to them and accepting one's fate. The idea of being a "son of winter and stars" seems to me a sort of inner belief, that the person in fact has the power to overcome the things set before him or herself, either by the fact that they are indeed originally the offspring of something, that seems to us humans as almost eternal, or just as some figurative idea of inner strength and fortitude. In the end, it's hard to tell. These are just mixed thoughts. Anyway, all the best to you and your channel. Keep the metal flag high. Regards, Tuomas

First off, thanks for reacting to this, it put a smile on my face and I've been waiting for this for a while. Ok, this is going to be a long comment, and I really hope you read it because it will make you appreciate this masterpiece even more... First things first: this is not a music video, it is a live recording. Let that sink in for a minute. THIS... IS... LIVE. You just experienced what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest metal compositions of all time. Period. So Jari, the lead musician, formed this band as a side project, and this song is his magnus opus. It took him over 6+ years to compose, as part of an album that he had to split into 2 parts (Time, and Time II is not released yet) because of how epic the endeavor was. Getting into a bit of technicalities, your average pop or rock song has between 60-200 tracks that are mixed to compose the final piece. Your more complex song contains in the neighborhood of about 400-500 different tracks for mixing. Sons of Winter and Stars is a composition of over 1400 tracks. Honestly, this track cannot be processed in just a single listen. There are countless layers and ebbs and floes that demand additional attentive listens; and believe me, the more you listen to it the more you will fucking love it. This band and every fuckin track they come out with is the product of a man's incomprehensible passion for metal and his incredible talent and hard work. So with that being said, listen to this song more, a lot more. Imagine if you had listened to this level of epicness when you first started out...it might have killed you lol. It's a good thing you worked up to it :). The scary thing is that everything this band does is this epic, and as you noticed right off, the level of musicianship these guys have is as good as it gets. The genius behind it all is Jari, the singer, who writes and arranges about 95% of the music. He quit playing guitar live, though, and they have a new guy named Asim doing the 2nd guitar parts. Jari said that it just got to be too much to try and put all that emotion into the vocals and play at his level (trust me, he's an awesome guitar player). The other guitar player, Teemu, is a beast in his own right, so they're not giving up anything live with Jari only singing. They were *just* here in the US, too bad you didn't get a chance to see them. BTW, the drummer in this has been touring with Nightwish for the last couple of years, so he's had a chance to work with the OTHER Finnish musical genius, Tuomas Holopainen, Nightwish's keyboard player--who, like Jari, writes and arranges virtually all of their stuff. Two of the most gifted composers out there, IMHO. Check out the live rehearsal vid for Time, it's from the same DVD that Sons of Winter and Stars. Jari does a nice guitar solo, and it's just as awesome.

Alex my boy, you did it ! You really did it :D Thank you so, so much for this reaction !! This is my favorite song of all time, it's just perfection and excellence in music form. And to think that this is a live performance...It's just mind blowing. Jari is just a brilliant musician and Kay is a fucking beast on the drums too. (He's touring with Nightwish now) The whole Wintersun team are just top notch. Almost every band from finland is amazing, but they're in a complete diferent level.

Maybe it was good that you waited on this one for a while. You have to have some perspective on a range of metal to know what you're getting with Wintersun. I honestly don't know how many times I've watched the Sonic Pump videos, but every time, I'm blown away yet again. I had the great honor of seeing them live earlier in the month, and believe me, they're this good, every note, the whole show. None of us wanted to leave when the concert was over. We just stood there, awestruck and with melted faces, while the band handed essentially everything they could find to us. Set lists, picks, drum sticks, bottles of water. I would say that, when you find yourself in a bit of a rut, review another one of the Sonic Pump cuts. "Time" or "Land of Snow and Sorrow." They'll get you up and moving around the room.

Finally! Thanks for appreciating my favourite song of all time. You did it justice. Keep it up. (Just lost in vegas to now go I guess).

Yay, finally! :) Wintersun is pure awesomeness. For me this song is (in a way) about my homeland. Both Wintersun and Nightwish (that drummer-wizard is Mr. Kai Hahto, who plays in Nightwish as well) comes from Finland. The winter here is long and dark, full of snow and starry skies. You should react to another great metal band - Amorphis. Most of their songs is based on Kalevala, Finnish national epic. And also another suggestion : Devin Townsend. He's genius! This song is a masterpiece!!! It means a lot for me, the chord progression and the talent of the guys inspire me to play everyday the guitar and learn myself new cool ideas. I'm a long-time Wintersun and metal fan and my opinion about this song is that it's one of the best well-written and cohesive "epics" in the history of Metal. Those 14 minutes are fluid, epic, huge, and the energy buildup with the last 2 choruses are perfect. Metal bands try a lot to release over 9minute tracks with and epic feel, but that one really became a reference for this concept. It's not the same anymore, you know... trying to make an epic metal song and compete with that, GOOD LUCK

Wintersun is a band I've been a huge fan of for years. They are some of the most talented and unique sounding guys I've seen in the whole of metal. Time I (the album its from) is a complete concept album. For me it feels like its almost like pagan metal, about the elements and mystical forces at play and honestly about finding peace and connecting with whats around you. Stargazing metal if you will.
