This song is based on a true story. The shooter did in fact take his own life.

Incident happened near where two of the band members worked, singer said it shows the brutality of everyday life.

The Shooter who ended his own life called his uncle while the police were outside and said "Will I still get into heaven if I killed myself?"

@@simply_titanIs there a audio recording or something on the internet of that phone call?

@mitchellpeck592 Unlikely. I'd say only authorised persons can access that. For the privacy, confidentiality, and decency towards the uncle and other people that wish not to be on the internet.

This a track off of a concept album from the point of view of a man that is having a very hard time coming to terms with what his life means and questioning if he should keep going. This is the first part of a 3 track run near the end of the album of him recalling stories from his past, hearing people tell stories of horrible moments from their past and wondering what was it that let them keep going on. In this story here, he wasn't even party to the events, just something he heard on the news. He's basically having an out of body experience and going back in time, a specter viewing the story from a 3rd person view, wondering how someone handles doing something that the subject of the story went through. This story is based on a true series of events that happened in Grand Rapids, MI, where La Dispute is from.

This song was devastating for me the first time I heard it. I was tearing up when the interlude came in with the line about a mother bury her child… hits like a truck

I’ve seen them play this one live (almost close enough to touch the stage) and it is intense. The whole crowd shouting along to the “Can I still get into heaven…” part. Chills

i read that line when i was .. 11 or 12? on a lyric page. i was hardcore christian and didn’t understand. it was a few years, age 15? i heard this song, and i realized these lyrics were from that post i misunderstood.. hit me so much harder. never listened without goosebumps

this whole fucking album is a masterpiece, la dispute has a unique way of portraying stories, listening to their music you're able to paint a mental picture of whats going on in their songs, I highly recommend their other songs 1. Edward Benz, 27 Times 2. I See Everything King Park is based on a real shooting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kyle Keenan(20) shot David Witherspoon(16) after Kyle flees to a motel and is then surrounded by cops, his Uncle, called him over the phone telling him to turn himself over to the cops which is why Kyle asks "can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?" Kyle was pronounced dead in the motel with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head most if not all of La Disputes Wildlife album is based on events that happened in Grand Rapids Michigan, wither experienced by him and friends or stories passed around by media or gossip

Im sure someone has said this because this isnt a super new video, but I strongly believe it's all told from the perspective of the lead singer. He heard about this happening in his home town and this song is his way of trying to understand why.

He didn’t figure it out. The perspective is of a “fly on the wall” for the whole song. First indication of this is “And I travel backwards through time and space And I disintegrate, become invisible I wanna see it where I couldn't when it happened I wanna see it all first hand this time I wanna know what it felt like…. From here it’s him “traveling through time and space” to be close to all of the effected individuals, ending with him outside the window of the hotel looking in.

Its quite the reflection of what goes on in this world to the point you guys were joking about the line, "just like last month (or was it last week?!)" But it also shows the impact of how great the storytelling is when the lyrics, conveyed with the vocal styling, sobered you up in just a few lines when they mentioned the unintended target being a kid. Im a fairly new father, my first and only , just four yrs old. And its stories like this that inspire me to be a better father, to make the best out of life for all of my loved ones, cuz we never know when we'll get side swiped by unintentional death. And the ending gets me too, the reality of the shooters situation.

I don't know how you guys go about choosing songs for these videos, but this song, Edward Benz 27 Times, and I See Everything are all songs about stories the lead singer was told, or events that happened around him that shaped his worldview very heavily, and these stories and their messages come together later in the album in the song "All Our Bruised Bodies And The Whole Heart Shrinks"

I love this song and i never even thought about seeing the first part from the shooters or the kids perspective. I do still think its from the singer trying to understand the world (because this is part of a trio of songs about traumatic stories he witnessed througout his life), but that prediction of the end is crazy good analysis

dudes, if you are ready to go down the rock music path, there is so much heart and meaning in most of it. I have been mixing bands for 20+ years and can pummel you with vital recommendations. Start with Boysetsfire - White Wedding Dress, Thursday - War All of The time, Glassjaw - Piano, Knocked Loose - Mistakes like fractures, Kublai Khan - Swan Song

Mad respect for branching out in your music but he fully describes how he is just imagining what happened when talking about the shooting with someone else who also wasnt there. La dispute always says so much in a few words so understandable that a song you hear one time you miss a little bit of set up

I always find it fascinating when youtubers who generally listen to rap, check out hardcore. For a little while there they had very similar vibes and you can even find hardcore (or hardcore adjacent) samples on a few songs. If you liked King Park, I would highly recommend checking out some Touché Amoré or Title Fight.
