Oh wow they just released this? I remember seeing this years ago on Kickstarter. Too bad they don't have vinyl version - I would've pick it up. Gotta say they did an excellent job with the track selection.
really cool to see the Smithsonian giving acknowledgement to Hip Hop music/culture.for somebody who fell in love with Hip Hop at the age of 9 in 1995 and who is more than familiar with these artist their music and their back ground story the info in this book is not going to be new to me but none the less seems like a great read.for somebody who is interested in Hip Hop/Rap but doesn't really know much on the history this book looks like a excellent start point and source for the info of the origins.the book has really beautiful photos and i'm sure it has great articles to read so whether your a veteran Hip Hop head or a novice who is interested in the music/culture and want to learn some history on the subject this book seems like it has something to offer everybody who is interested in the topic.
No DJ Kool Herc or Grand Wizzard Theodore? I guess the Smithsonian glossed over the two of the founding fathers of Hip-hop. Cardi-B was more important to put in the book, so I'll save my $100 and save a tree too.
Not a "hip hop" fan, but this is very nice for you guy's that DO love it (which is quite a lot)! R&B is more my speed! CDs are necessary sometimes, believe me I know!
The Smithsonian should do a series on 20's to show them all the starting influences like Cab Calloway etc it would be great to see some new colorized images from black and white era.
They should do metal or punk next to get these goddamn white mid aged men back in the Smithsonian museum, keep them happy & occupied again after this long ass pandemic
