Natural World: Hippos - Africa's River Giants
David Attenborough reveals the life of the hippopotamus as never seen before. With incredible underwater footage, this film delves into the world of the hippo - an animal that cannot swim yet is utterly dependent on water. In Botswana's Okavango delta, hippos face an unparalleled challenge - deep floodwaters dry to dust in a matter of months. In one extraordinary season, the team go beneath the surface to see them protect their families and face their enemies as they deal with the drought. Going far beyond their dangerous reputation, the show discovers the true nature of the hippo, an animal that is compassionate, sensitive and highly intelligent.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

Hippos are incredibly dangerous, and lions around them learn this early on. We tend to think of the lions as the supreme danger, but hippos are worse. Even crocodiles generally don't dare to bother them since an angry response can result in a bite force great enough to break their bones--it's just not worth it. It's not surprising to see a pride give way. Hippos also kill humans quite routinely in areas like the Okavango Delta here--at a higher rate than any other wild animal (not including those in the insect and micro worlds like mosquitoes). Despite being shaped a bit like an obese cow, their temperament is even more volatile than the moose.

Yeah, but I’m pretty sure this is one of those rare lion prides that practices hunting bigger quarry it mentioned on the video that they’ve got the numbers and the experience to bring down an elephant, not to mention the hippo is weaker than normal from thirst. Either way I usually hate hippos they’re fat fucks and hog the water holes and kill other animals that desperately need a drink but in this case I really wanted this guy to make it

Hippos are highly territorial, they usually live in lakes or rivers, spend the day chilling in water to protect their skin from burning under the sun and come out at night, technically expanding their territory at night. They usually give 2 warnings before attacking, the sound at 0:55 is the first one when they notice you invade their territory, the second one is coming closer to you with the jaw fully open to show their teeth. After that, if you are still there they usually charge. There's probably not a single animal (or even group of animals) that would/could face an adult hippo, their skin and fat are too thick to penetrate with teeth and claws, their charge is like a schoolbus hitting you at 50 kph, their jaw is like having said bus fall on whatever part of you they get. They are that lethal.

Once again, thank you kind Sir Attenborough and the support crew - the film, land and air transport and the musicians people! Would you consider doing a Q&A in 2022? Anyone else think that this would be amazing, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? 👍 Much love and prayers from a huge fan somewhere near Seattle and around the World. ⚘🙏❤🙏⚘

A hippopotamus called Humphrey who became an internet sensation after being raised as a pet has mauled his keeper to death. ... The 40-year-old farmer, who said the animal was like a "son" to him, was confirmed dead by medics early on Sunday morning. 14 Nov 2011

Something a lot of people forget is that "Hippopotamus" is "Water Horse", that's because everything you see on a hippo is Muscle and Bone. Hippos have almost zero body fat, so they are unbelievably strong.

They can't swim. They're not boring enough. So they do walk underwater and when you see them from the surface of the water looking like they're swimming what they're doing is they're going down to the bottom of the body of water and pushing themselves off the bottom repeatedly that's how come they appear to make movements like a dolphin when they are chasing something in water because they are just simply sinking down to the floor and then rebounding from the floor over and over again.

Humans are flawed. 90 percent of us are totally useless. Animal populations are kept down for a reason but not humans? We honestly need the death penalty enforced. Billions and Billions are spent housing absolutely insane violent people..... Why? Why are homeless people lying absolutely everywhere now? Gun crimes through the roof.... Why? Because we are soft, we have gotten away from our primal instincts and are turning into Wall-Es prediction, literally..... Lul. I honestly hope and pray some radical person with enough money to run for office.... Does it... If you see someone with radical ideas based around making us stronger and getting rid of evil... Nature isn’t about balance. It’s about greed. Even plants compete for sunlight and nutrients. There are winners and losers. Great White sharks travel thousands of miles to feast on the seal pups. Migratory birds make a stop at massive fish mating sites to eat vast quantities of fish. Just about everything eats cicadas every 17 or so years. And humans do this too. In North America particularly we see there is an epidemic of obesity. Because with plenty comes gluttony. Nature is about greed.

@@holeindanssock156 also i think you would not someone if it would disadvantage any of your family members. anybody can fall down a hole, doesn‘t mean you have to kill them. also those 90% of people u were talking about: most of them get exploited by the minority so the society can progress. they aren‘t useless. you just don‘t see the farmers behind your food or the people in developing countries scraping together the minerals for your devices. but that doesn‘t matter anyways because we r all humans and until we will be genetically modified or some shit, we all have the same potential and the same right to live. it‘s the circumstances that shape us and you cannot take anyones life for that.
