The difference is mainly the usage. That is, katakana is used to write words that have foreign or non-Japanese origin

@@ninnajseyer942 Not really. It's based on the origin of the word - whether it's Japanese or foreign (English, French, even Russian, German, etc...) For example, if we want to spell out "arigatou", we need to use hiragana because the origin of that word is Nihonggo. But if we want to spell the slang word "sankyu" (slang term for "Thank you" in Nihongo), we need to use katakana.
