Lets gooooo! This Mini Cooper shoots sounds awesome, and I think you’re gonna kill it! And bringing in Adam feels like a great choice, you know he’ll carry on the vision you give him 🙌🏻 I like this “sit and chat” style video. It’s cool to see what’s on your plate and what you’re thinking through! Personally I just bought 2 of the Chroma VND filters from Polar Pro (which let you control the polarizer and ND, and they make them in snap on or thread on) and I’m really liking them. They aren’t perfect, and are clunky to use if you’re operating a gimbal, but the image is the cleanest I have ever seen on an ND filter. I have a video coming out Monday that shows me using them on a shoot. So that’s definitely 1 solid option for you. Keep killing it bro! It’s encouraging seeing your progress and growth!

Congrats on the new gig. Word of mouth is everything! I actually really dig the magnetic filters from freewell. The m2 magnetic system is pretty strong. The CPL does have a bit of a yellow shift though. Also I’ve experienced vignetting at 16mm with the filters. I understand if you don’t like a magnetic system though. Good luck with the newsletter. NISI Swift System or the Freewell K2 system for screw on. You need to get one designed for variable ND+polarizer, they aren’t compatible otherwise. Those two are good options. I’ve seen other comments saying polarpro and they aren’t bad but they aren’t as good as I want them to be for the price. Also afaik they don’t have a VND+cpl solution. They have a filter that combines CP and ND. Also, they are tough built, come with a lifetime guarantee, and very neutral. Scientifically, it's basically impossible to be both ND and 100% neutral. @vasicmihajlo
@vasicmihajlo Месяц назад
I would recommend a variable ND over a hard stop one any day of the week (Aside from built-in ND's). It obviously does the same thing, but it gives you so much more versatility and easy of use. I don't even want to attempt to count the number of times I would miss the shot if I had to lose time on changing a filter, having the variable ND is nice! Even when the lighting is not changing all that much, even turning to your side can require an exposure change and for those small differences VND helps a lot. Another useful application for VND is if you are doing a single camera interview and the lighting changes due to weather you can keep the shot going and just adjust the amount of VND, where you would have to jump in exposure without the filter. (this of course can also be overcome if you have a lens with a de-clicked aperture ring). There are plenty more cases where it's better to have an Variable ND rather than a fixed ND, but this comment is already very long haha. And also, I might be wrong on this one, every variable ND kind of does a little polarization itself so it might help in that way too but I wouldn't count on it. There are also some 2 in 1 filters that have both the VND and polarizer. P.S. I Love and appreciate your videos on BTS stuff and all the things we as filmmakers go through! Keep it up! Hi from Bosnia and Herzegovina!
@davidmorefield
@davidmorefield Месяц назад
@@vasicmihajlo thanks for the insight. Trust me you are talking to a massive fan of variable nd as I have it on my fx6. For this shoot in particular, a single stop nd would be ok bc I can use the declicked aperture ring on my gm lens for minute adjustments. I’ll probably in the f4-f8 range mostly.

Tilta VND is horrible, unless there is new version. Crazy X pattern and color cast ... I have on, and never used it, it's so bad. Although Tilta Mirate with set of IR-NDs from Vaxis is cool, so maybe that would be a solution for David. I got lately VAXIS circular filters with polarization adjustment but I cannot recommend them too, because of X pattern. X pattern is strong on 3-7 stops version, it's better on 1-5, but I haven't tested it on wider lenses, cause I do not own them :D. I guess save bet is something from Peter McKinnon branded PolarPros or NiSi True Color. But I haven't tested them, it's just based on YT reviews, so treat this with a grain of salt.

+1 for the statement on magnetic VNDs. I got the Freewell with Mist option.. just had them with me in Namibia, super dusty and sandy shoots, a bunch of magnetic fragments from the sand ate their way in between the base and the filter, the main filter is pretty much done now due to scratches from said fragments between magnetic cap and front element. In hindsight not surprising but still a painful 400$ mistake now that whole purchase. Not sure how normal VNDs would have performed in relation to sand and dust though.
