I run a stump grinding business and there are some tricks to it I learned. Grind the side of the stump nearest you first and go down in sweeps to the bottom in dirt, that way you are cutting with the grain of the wood, don't go directly down from the top as that is cutting across the grain and it takes way longer, your teeth wont last as long, its harder on the machine, its also the cause of the head bouncing which is due to too much of the radius of the cutting wheel in wood, this also causes the wood to get hot and harden making the job even harder for the teeth to cut and shortening their life. Get rid of the hood at the front it serves no purpose in open areas and stops you sweeping on the side of the stump as suggested above. Dont raise the boom up and expose the door to flying debris, stumps can have all sorts of things hidden in them like stones and metal that you dont want fired at the door so keep the boom low between you and the cutting head. I wear shin guards and padded pants doing it as I've been hit a few times and that's just a small machine. Once you have ground the side of the stump to about the 3/4 of it, move the wheel ahead of the stump so you are cutting with the back of the wheel upwards. If you keep going on the side to the far edge cutting with the front of the wheel once you hit the root flair on the back side you will be cutting across grain so back cutting gets you back to cutting with the grain which is much faster and easier on the machine and teeth. Also use a chainsaw to block the stump to near ground before grinding, it saves loads of time and tooth wear, far cheaper to sharpen chains than replace grinder teeth.

@@xt7190 It was a safety concern over a cost issue, maybe I should have left the wear issue out of my statement. I worked in a rental shop for years and we had a waiver for people renting chainsaws for cutting stumps, we also had a stump grinder for rent. And the teeth on those stump grinder teeth lasted a very long time, carbide is very hard. So I do know what I am talking about. Thank you for the informed comment!

That's a nice attachment for your machine! I have a manual stump grinder that I don't use real often because it's such a workout! It does basically the same thing with a much smaller cutting wheel, and the side-to-side motion is all "me" created. One thought... perhaps use some bright colored tape or maybe a paint pen to mark and give you a reference as far as where the center of the cutting wheel is?

I'm using same thing but on 3PT on tractor. Like guy said, you gotta not get stuck in the bowl or it bogs down...move forward or backward to knock off the edges. After getting down to the ground and everything is covered with woodchips, it becomes guesswork as to where to grind. I use the bucket or shovel to move the chips out of the way. The stump is a good 2-3 times bigger below grade with big roots going off....getting it down to grade is the easy part and then doing 6-8 inches below grade is the hard part. First 1/2 rows of teeth on the outer edge of the rotor take the most beating...mine nearly shot after like 5 huge stumps...one that was 42 inch diameter on top (4 trees going together) and like 6+ feet wide below grade took me all day (realistically like 5-6 hours). I got a backhoe and on the fence what's faster...anything 24+ inches on top probably best of grinding, but anything smaller can probably dig up similar speed (NP to dig a stump in 30 minutes). Honestly not too impressed with the grinder...it's kind of a pain to use and crude...the bolts holding teeth worn down and loose... makes me wonder if I can even replace the teeth to see if it works better.

*SUGGESTION:* We took two angle hardware and screwed them into the sides of our Baumalight Grinders with self tapping screws. Then we use fiberglass driveway marking rods (orange) drilled through and angled towards the blade on both sides. *When my workers are in the cab they can see the rods move...showing them where the blade is compared to the stump/ground. A simple marker to draw notches onto the poles. Just like a tractor bucket level indicator...but angled & on hinges.* Another option is a remote camera, but we tried that and our workers were crashing into objects focusing too much on the camera, rather than their surroundings.
