This stirred up a lot of forgotten memories for me! I had a Ray Cook M-1 mallet putter. It was a big deal because these were relatively new and Cook was in San Antonio, Texas making these things so being a Texan, I wanted one. Cook's putters were making inroads on the PGA and LPGA at this time. My Dad worked a deal with some club trades with a fellow and got it for me. The thing was ridiculously long, so off came the grip, cut the shaft to my preferred length, re-grip, and I was off to the races. My golf bag with clubs got stolen and the Ray Cook went away to be replaced by a Ping Answer (one of the early ones, which I still use.)
I had my clubs stolen last week from my garage and was really gutted as I had my first ever Odyssey two ball putter in my set and my my nearly brand new Ping 430 10K max which I absolutely love, my wife is really pleased as she says I can spend a bit more time at home. She won't be pleased when I get myself all new shiny clubs for next season
I love these trips to golfclubs4cash. I wish I had something like that near me in the U.S. Two comments, I can relate to Chris's comment on clubs getting stolen because I has several sets stolen in 2019. As far as clubs go, I have been a Titleist fan for a long time. My first driver was the 975D. Then I when through every driver up to my current TSR2. Most have been bought on the secondhand market just because of the price. My current irons are AP3's and I have Vokey wedges. My putter vary between my Scotty, a ping Scottsdale, and a Yes! Tracy II. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and I am looking forward to the match with these clubs between you two.
Dude.. you have millions of places.. we don’t get PGA golf stores like you lot or the sweet garage sales by all the Rich folk around the courses.. them deals are better than anything we have.. We would kill for the stores and golf places you lot have lol
@@craigforecast9168 Unfortunately, I live in a rural area with limited access. The closest PGA superstore is 5 hours away and garage sales around here have NO golf clubs as a rule. Even our Goodwill has not golf clubs. The closest is a Play-it-again sports with limited selection or a Golf Galaxy with maybe 75-100 woods and wedges...no iron sets. It's just my geographic burden to bear
I’ve still got the Ping G5 with the Prolaunch Blue shaft and take it out on the course occasionally. It doesn’t have the distance of a modern day driver, but it is a fairway finder for sure.
My grandad made my first club in the early 80s (I was born 1969) it was like a hybrid club that I could drive with because it was slightly lofted and could hit off the deck.. Loved it as at the time his driver was a wood driver and a pure nightmare to hit..😊
Mine were used Mizuno T Zoid Pros. They were +1 inch, and I was 13 years old. Not an ideal fit. But they taught me the importance of centered strikes. My next set were Titleist AP2s.
My first, hand-me-down, half set was some Max Faulkner Avenger irons and persimmon woods. I knocked around the local back field until I got good enough to try a municipal course on the local common. Looking forward to watching the 'not so Junior' play off. Very nostalgic vlog 👍🏼
The ping groove change, happened during the Ping eye 2 and Eye 2+ era, a good while, before the IST or zing. The Ping wedge Chris chose 1st was much later, it looks like the wedge from the S59 set late 1990's. I have the irons that go with that wedge, they are good irons and a change in direction for PING. My first set, were Brownings, like Ping, built like tanks, but didn't stay in the bag for long, over the early years many changes took place.
Wow! Flashing back to my first set from my uncle of Johnny Miller Spalding blade irons lol. I think I was about 12. The persimmon woods lol! Holy smokes, I'm old! 1982ish
My first set was a Bob Rossberg set from Austad golf that matched from Driver to PW. The only other club I selected was a Ping putter. Austads is still around but started in my hometown as a mail order company. I won a closest to the pin contest with the 4 iron of that set with a very lucky hard swing against a strong wind from the right and I held my slice against it about two extra clubs in length.
Ah the G5 fairway woods. I still have my 3 and 5 woods from when I was in high school. Played them for years. Just felt great and yeah a metal shaft in a wood now is unheard of. The Callaway X-12s were my first nice set of irons and they had stiff graphite shafts in them. Also crazy in 2004
I can always spend a full morning wondering round there when I’m over from Spain, James I love Golf Clubs 4 cash in warrington. Just a nice 40 min drive over from West Yorkshire!!
My first golf clubs were RAM Tom Watsons in the early 80s absolutely loved em bought from goldenhill golf club in Stoke on Trent, alas it's no more but many happy memories 😂⛳
My first set was cut-down set of mens Ram Aries blades my dad bought off a friend of his. Still credit those for helping me become a great iron striker
First set was dave pelz feather light irons 3 -sw followed shortly after by a set of ping eye 2 black dot 2 - sw ....played those all way threw high school golf ....91-95 ....yes i am old
Aren’t todays 4 irons about same loft as those older clubs’ 3 irons? Isn’t that what strong lofts are about, but with lower center of gravity to get into air easier?
Yeah, my irons are strong lofted but I have zero issue hitting them high. They're probably closer to 1 club up, but again, elevating them is zero issue for me. I love them.
@@r3clus386 It has to do with sales. If your PW is lower lofted, you have to buy more wedges to match to shorter shots. When I started playing golf, we had a PW and a SW. now there is PW, SW, wedges from 48 degrees to 60 degrees, and a myriad of bounces for each loft to suit each gamer. I’m 70 and more and more of my clubs have head covers every year to make up for my lost distance and wedges for the short game because head cover clubs lose accuracy. Hit ‘em straight my friend (because if you play golf you are my friend) and so glad you love your irons.
@@barrymuller5131 I think there is a level of truth to that, absolutely. I remember just having a sand wedge years ago. Now I have all these different wedges and I doubt I need all of them. My 56 barely comes out of the bag, it's usually 52 or a 60 when I need something really high or I'm in the sand. I think that the tech has evolved a bit, though, where they can make the irons hit a bit hotter and higher so it changes set composition. I also feel like it's marketing to help make people feel better, like "wow I can blast this 7 iron!" when really it's a traditional 6.
I had hand me down Northwestern irons from the 1960's (Grandfather to Father to me) back in the late 1970's with Marty Frugol laminate woods. I'd shoot like a 120 with them in 2024. Idk how we got along with them back in the day ... 😂
You can buy from the UK and they will be sent over, usually with free shipping. I bought a set of one length cobras for 300 dollars, and they got here in 3 days. About 3 months ago to Vancouver Island.
So im new-ish to golf and ive been learning on a set of ping zing 2 irons, im starting to think im ready for a club upgrade but i want something that might feel familiar while hitting it. Any sort of recommendations on irons that would be a good upgrade?
First irons were Callaway Big Bertha 1996 model. 3 wood was the original Warbird. And of course that started my path to financial ruin, I've owned over 20 different iron types over the years ... woods who knows?
I remember buying the R580 XD in 2003 I think and it was $379. My dad thought I was crazy paying that much for a driver. 20 years later and Titleist is charging almost double
I have a 983K HCR with the original Diamana Red flower band shaft in the closet... Illegal COR as I understand but crazy how it well it does against modern drivers distance wise. Not nearly as good when it comes to forgiveness though. Misses will have you down at the BBQ in the woods!
