For everyone asking, that’s the end of the movie. He looks around, but ends up leaving. The father was in the whole under ground but the detective didn’t know or hear him. The father was never seen again, and the movie leads you to believe he died in the hole, because the only 2 people that knew where he was are dead.

At the end, the detective looks around because he thinks he hears something, but he just ends up leaving. The father is never found again. It’s leads you to believe he dies in the pit. It’s really sad.
