The reason the planes were so wildly colored is to tell who was who in the air. And to also frighten the enemy that they were fighting Jasta 11 or one of their nickname the Flying circus. Most did not have parachutes it was considered cowardly to have a parachute at the time. yes, he is credited with a confirmed 80 kills, his actual kills might be much more because you need visual confirmation by someone else to have it confirmed, one of the reasons he had is a plane painted red to be easily seen and noticed. And he was originally a calvery soldier and transitioned to being a pilot.
@AnikaJarlsdottr
@AnikaJarlsdottr 2 года назад
not only that, but whenever there seemed to be any doubt as to who scored a victory, he would often give the credit to one of the other pilots in his Jasta instead of himself. both sides may have differed on exactly how many planes he shot down, but neither side figured it to be less than 80.
@Nastranai
@Nastranai Год назад
It's also a throwback to the heraldry of old. Jasta 11 were quite literally knights of the air, flying with their own heraldry to mark out friend from foe.
@ericlanglois3782

German standards for confirming a kill were different. Visual confirmation by someone else was a British standard. For Germans the pilot had to actually land and grab a part from the downed aircraft. If you didn't bring back a traceable part then you weren't credited. Furthermore Manfred started out as a scout on a reconnaissance aircraft and shot down some aircraft from the back seat but couldn't claim any of those kills.

Oswald Boelke LITERALLY wrote the book on aerial combat. 8 essentials for surviving air combat, largely unchanged since they were written and still important to one degree or another in modern air conflict. most US fighter training manuals are based upon these principals. 1) try to secure advantages before attacking. if possible, keep the sun behind you. 2) always carry through an attack when you have started. 3) fire only at close range when you have your opponent squarely in your sights. 4) always keep your eye on your opponent and dont allow yourself to be deceived by ruses. 5) in any attack, it is essential to assail your enemy from behind. 6) if your opponent dives on you, do not try to flee but turn to meet him. 7) when behind enemy lines, be mindful of your path for retreat. 8) for the Staffel (squadron), always attack in groups of 4 or 6. when the fight breaks up into a series of single combats, take care that several do no go for the same opponent.

One thing I love about this particular part of WW1 is that the pilots here were effectively medieval knights. Keep in mind, in reality things were not at all as bloody as is being modernly portrayed. The red baron scoring 4 victories in 1 day was absolutely insane. In reality these guys would get get up, fight, and mostly return back home at the end of the day. Due to their expressive color patterns both sides were well aware of their enemies and would discuss tactics against the weaknesses of specific enemy pilots. The battle in the sky was comparatively to the ground a small one but due to the nature of it all pilots "knew" each other almost as well as their family despite having never met. It is truly the last "chivalric" era in history.

@RenegadeSamurai 8 месяцев назад
Pilots were seen as "popstars" back then and for a good reason. The bravery to get into these things and fighting in the air at that time specially was huge.

As some others mentioned, Manfred von Richthofen was a cavalry soldier from Prussia before being a pilot, and yes one of the first lines "The flying circus and a man from Prussia" is the reference to the brightly colored planed the Jasta 11 flew and Richthofen himself.. They painted them brightly so they would be able to identify each other easily, and a side effect was as their reputation became legendary especially during bloody April, the allied pilots knew exactly who they were up against. It dropped morale of their enemies. That month as the video stated the Jasta 11 downed 89 aircraft, The Red Baron taking 22 of them himself, and on his most famous day of it, 4 planes downed by him alone. They also don't mention his brother was also a notorious Ace, Lothar von Richthofen downed 40 enemies. His cousin was also a pilot, They were all legendary at the time, however, at the end of it all, Manfred had been the most lethal. The most feared. The most respected of them. Which is too bad, they really were all respectable fighters, they all embraced the same doctrines of aerial combat.

He Was born in Wrocław (Breslau) nowadays in Poland. I live next street. He was also cousin to Wolfram von Richthofen, Generalfeldmarschall of Luftwaffe in WW2 whom airplanes fighted during invasion of Poland, battle of England, siege of Stalingrad and many more.

And during his first mission in WW1 Wolfram got attacked and the Red Baron came to his rescue and pursued his attacker, so the Red Baron kinda died to save his cousin.

Welcome back! Great reaction, any of these collabs with yarn hub are always very cool, and like you said they tell the story so you don't have to research it lol 😅 I believe the line about horseback to the sky is referencing his service prior to aviation was in cavalry - going off memory and too lazy to look it up so don't quote me. As you mentioned it has a bit of a different sound for Sabaton. My guess is that the organ (the Hammond organ in the song not the pipe organ in the intro) and swing feel is meant to evoke some sort of ragtime/early jazz idea and loosely inspired by a waltz or something. Just a hunch.

My great grandfather was at the Somme his original Unit was cavalry regiment but for whatever reason he ended up in the Manchester regiment and on the first day after the bombardment that unit and others stormed ahead but was cut to pieces if I remember correctly over 20,000 British killed or wounded the first day he was wounded lost his left eye and sent back home myself when I enlisted in the army I wanted to be a gunner or better yet a crewman which I became in the challenger 2 our motto hasn't changed and neither has the our insignia which is a picture of a tank the first tank in fact Big Willie fear Naugh is our motto being able to join the same regiment as my great grandfather is a true honour to me because they replaced horses with tanks so

Well, to be fair, there was a bit of hyperbole on my part. I did say I knew he was a German flying ace which is what 99.9% of the population probably knows. Just like Joan of Arc. Most people have heard of her, but many do not know the full story, the battles she fought, the name of her horse, etc.
