Historians explain why we have Black History Month but not white history month

We weren’t “given” Black History Month. We fought and organized for it. In 1926, historian and scholar Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week, and over time this became Black History Month. February was chosen because it contains Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays. In 1976, President Gerald Ford made Black History Month an official US commemoration.
For many Americans, particularly students, February is the only time that they learn about the history, accomplishments, and culture of Black Americans but unfortunately racist lawmakers are even trying to walk that back.
In fact, just two week ago, Florida prohibited AP African-American studies class from being taught. White History Month would be redundant because white supremacy ensures that whiteness is the baseline for everything in the USA.
White History is already centered throughout most of the year, and still major events like colonization, slavery, and genocide are not adequately discussed. Some of you should focus on fleshing out your own history before attacking ours.
