I have been so focused on escalating tensions in Israel and the Middle East, that I was unaware of the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Acapulco, Mexico. 5 days ago, Category 5 Hurricane Otis hit the over one million population of Acapulco. The most intense impact of the storm hit at 2:30am and the population had less than 12 hours advance notice, because it intensified from a tropical storm to a category 5 hurricane in less than 24 hours.

HOW do you have a hurricane, especially Cat 5, without any rain or warning??? That's more like a tornado, since there was no rain!!! It landed around midnight when most people were sleeping. Well they did warned the residents of Alcapulco of the storm, but as a tropical storm or a C1 hurricane and because of this people didn't worried much and remember they warned of a tropical storm or a weak C1 is coming and then out of nowhere Otis began to explosively rapidy intensify from a 70mph storm to a 165mhp storm in 12h and literally caught everyone of guard. Luckily the death are not high, but the cost of the damage is with $16B in damages making it the most costliest hurricane in the Northeastern Pacific basin.

first.. IT HAD rain! I don´t know why people say it had not. second, tornadoes ave ve rain too ! third. Iguarantee you vast majority of people were not sleeping.. we knew it was very strong in the noon, like 7pm most people were aware of the danger so no one could sleep. By 11pm winds were very strong and increasing.. then by 2 AM it hit with full strenght .. Anemometer located in the San Diego fortress measured 205 mph gust.. it was around 2:30- 3:00 AM when i remember I though that wind could destroy my concrete walls .. it was like if something solid hit the wall for like 20-30 minutes it blew my doors and windows and trees around my house. Also most ligh poles were gone

Ian taught us much about salt water and building damage. The hurricane brought salt water with the winds, which is now in the electric lines pretty much everywhere. You can't just turn the power back on until everything is inspected, building by building. Battery powered cars, golf carts and power tools will shortly catch fire from the salt. This is going to be a bad year for them. Reach out to Fort Myers Beach, they have experience in the unthinkable.

I don't know that it was the models that failed. I believe the models were provided with inadequate information. Hurricane hunters are not used nearly as much on the Pacific side as they are on the Atlantic, and the radar arrays in this area do not have the same level of information or coverage that would normally feed the models. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this. Simply tragic!

Mexicos Governments federal and state are not responding fast enough, the stores have been looted because there is no water, electricity or communication for a city of over 1million residents. The president of Mexico decided to drive from Mexico City in a military jeep to Acapulco, knowing that the principal highways have been cut. He wasted 12 hours on the road to Acapulco instead of flying in a helicopter to view the damage. The people of Acapulco feel abandoned.

@davidl6332: So far, the response has been slow as the people being interviewed can attest to their conditions( and reporters have noted). AMLO has the power to make things happen with just a few words: " Make it Happen Now!" He also has the enormous resources of the Federal Government at his beckoning, and he lagged by trying to drive to Acapulco in a jeep. Instead, he could flown in a helicopter and used that time to survey the damage first hand and meet with state and local officials to coordinate the response with his cabinet members. The damage that huricanes can do is academic and history has shown the destruction they can do.The Mexican government has the capacity and enormously talented people to serve its citizens, I just don't like the way it's being used. God bless Mexico and the people of Acapulco, and I hope for a better response because its people deserve better.

The sun is taken into account in climate models because that is where the long term effects take place. Climate change warms the atmosphere which in turns warms the ocean. And a warmer ocean is more conducive to stronger hurricanes.

I agree. I was there in the mid 90's and it was just gorgeous. One of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. No way would I return now. Too dangerous and I'm not referring to hurricane damage.

O simple forecastor; Mother Nature is a living entity. All of creation depends upon her for all life. Do not address her as a monster. Thank goodness instead for the mercy Nature showed to the people of Mexico.

They still are denying it. I used to not believe it but it’s impossible to deny at this point, unless you want to intentionally delude yourself.

The frequency and severity of storms is increasing, and an exponential trend is clearly emerging. In light of current events, it is necessary to understand the causes of catastrophic climate change. A detailed analysis of cause-and-effect relationships and solutions were announced at the online forum "Global crisis. There is a way out"

I like that sound before they go to Stephanofalous. I want that every time a door opens in our house, a door opens on our vehicles, the phone rings, the oven or microwave open or close. Come on let's make that sound ubiquitous throughout society.
