Owner felt it was in good enoigh shape to be rezoned for a bed& breakfast but when she couldn't get the city to rezone a private house in a residential neighborhood to become a B&B it suddenly was in too bad a condition to salvage & had to be torn down. OK, so it was a big FU to the city for not bending to her will.

Owner felt it was in good enough shape to be rezoned for a bed & breakfast in 2016. 8 years ago. She was going to put money into it to fix it up to make it a B&B but the city denied it. Without the investment income, it's silly to spend the money on it. So for 8 years it's been rained in, flooding due to Hurricane Ian in 2022, and just neglect. It wasn't "suddenly". The people who bought it thought the same thing and tore it down instead of rebuilding it.

She sold it and two days later is was demolished in a hurry. Shady developer vibes across the board. Expect a gaudy four-plex or McMansion to go up soon.

@@janofb having owned homes that were both old and neglected- 1st home was a very beat & neglected former rental - it isn't that hard or expensive to put on a complete roof to protect your investment. Probably right about the McMansion though. My service territory included Newport Beach Peninsula & there are very few original homes left, mostly 2/3 story McMansions squeezed on small lots with not enough parking.

On the other hand, some times old houses are just old, and unless someone is willing to step up to save them, they will be gone. Houses like this should have a special zoning to trigger a greace period with public notice of intent to demolish, giving opportunity for entities to save them. That’s a damn shame. Even if the house was that bad the interior trimmings and furnishings should’ve been salvaged; you’re not going to find 1880’s quality and materials much longer. I can see how the homeowner could get spooked into doing a hasty demo though, enough people telling her the place could topple in a storm and it is hurricane season in Florida after all. I know I’d be a nervous wreck if I couldn’t convince a roofer to at least start stabilizing it.

the only way she got spooked is that she knew that if she didn't move fast she'd have to deal with all kinds of resistance from people who want a say but don't have any of their own money at stake, like that preservationist lady. Watch the video. She had a demo permit and provided it to the buyer who chose to tear it down. She didn't tear it down. While the video says "tearing down the house was part of the deal" that means the buyer told her they wanted to tear it down and that's why they wanted to demo permit. Once the new owner has the property, whatever deal they made about saving it or tearing it down is irrelevant. Buyers tell sellers they won't change a thing on a house, then gut it once they own it.

I don't know about Florida specifically, but both federal preservation rules and the various state preservation rules through much of New England and the Midatlantic regions allow the property owner to do whatever they please with the property they own, regardless of age or historical significance and regardless if it has managed to make its way onto any sort of national or state historic registry. While most owners respect the rules and properties, every once in awhile, there is someone willing to just bulldoze a historic site because the place is actually a money pit.

Doesn't matter , the owner had the right to do what they want with it. Burn it , tear it down , use it as a toilet . Once you own it Noone had a right to tell you what to do with it

@@alphaomega5909 You do realize that no property owner can do what they want with their own property, right? Have you ever tried to get a building permit, worked through the maze of regulations, stood in front of the local zoning board to plead your case, and jumped through all the hoops so that the inspector who comes through several times while you're building doesn't shut your project down? I doubt there are many places left on this planet where property owners aren't subject to local building laws.

@@alphaomega5909 So you're agreeing with my point that owners can't do whatever they want with their own property as they're all subject to the laws and regulations of their local municipalities - nice! And I am also a homeowner: my husband and I are working on restoring a 200 year old stone tenant farmhouse in the Northeast. :) I looked up the Heritage Hill Association which you mentioned; it looks like they've done things right to keep their own historic buildings around and in good shape; I agree that more towns need groups like this to keep us from losing all of our old houses. :)
