The UNESCO World Heritage site of Banska Stiavnica is an historic gold and silver mining town in central Slovakia. Situated inside an ancient collapsed volcano, locals have been extracting minerals here for millenia. But the town reached its heyday during the early Renaissance, when gunpowder was used to draw the mines up to their full capacity. These days, the mineral deposits have been exhausted and no mining activity takes place, leaving a small, sleepy but interesting town behind!
