Please put MAY in such video titles! I grew up around a few people that were exactly that way, believing/pretending to know what is on other people's mind. This becomes so condescending, ANNOYING and smells of pure arrogance when one gets older! It has reached a point at which i am a little bit thankful when people have the brains to put a MAYBE in the title.

@@mousemd you can change the speed of the whole video in 0.25 steps (it's directly above quality) and with youtube enhancer installed even in 0.05 steps. that's what i do when it is only one channel or a video here and there. i asked for a single word in a title, but the kind of change you want for just a single person or a handfull of persons is a differnet animal. on most channels that's only going to happen after months of complaints under every single video. the guy withe the 'dark...' channels is a prime example. To be honest, i guess even my little request will not be heard.

A minor correction about gladiators: They *were* often famous and celebrated, but they did *not* have a high social status, on the contrary. This might be a bit difficult to wrap our heads around today, as both usually go hand in hand in our culture. Retired gladiators often founded gladiator schools (ludi) or took over existing ones after their master retired, because no other source of income was open to them.

Edit: This was written in the middle of the part about English accents, and the upshot is that Simon is correct. I used to work at one of the two oldest California Renaissance faires. These were the first two such events in the country, both put on by the same organization which was founded by a teacher -- the first one, in Southern California, was something of a school project. It kept its educational mission until the end, and so tried to remain more true to history than most of the later Ren Faires it inspired. This extended to the accent we were to use. For theatrical reasons, because it sounds "posh" to American ears, the Queen and her court used modern RP. However, us street actors were all taught to use the actual accent of Shakespeare's time. In reality, it's not much like the standard accents of either America or English. If you want to hear what it's closest to, watch a pirate film starring Robert Newton. As Long John Silver he used his native West Country accent, and so established the "pirate accent" for all time. As it happens, this is closer to the sound of the London accent of the late 16th century than any other modern accent. So, if we had any difficulty with the accent we were taught, the rule was: "When in doubt, talk like a pirate." The result was that any Brits who happened to visit the Faire thought we sounded like we were all from Dorset.

As someone with an interest in historical costumes - I AGREE!! Corsets weren't invented until the late 18th century, and absolutely no stays or corsets were EVER worn against the skin. Tightlacing is a myth perpetuated by Hollywood, and unfortunately they force actresses into ill-fitting overly-tight contraptions who then complain loudly to media about how awful they are... They were the standard undergarment for 500 years, and every woman in the western world wore one unless sleeping (queens, washerwomen, everyone in between)- they weren't that bad!!!

I once read that the reason people thought Vikings wore horned helmets is because they’d be buried with drinking horns that happened to be by their heads, so archaeologists thought that clearly the horns must have been part of the helmet. SOME samurai resisted western influence. The Satsuma Rebellion were the samurai resisting westernization post-Meiji restoration and what The Last Samurai was loosely based on. Saigo Takamori wanted to modernize Japan but not westernize it. He just wanted to get rid of the Tokugawa and restore the power of the emperor, who was a puppet at the time.

To be honest about raiding Nords. Víkingr did not have horned helmets .. but our ancestors DID wear funny hats (usually worn to cultural events today) .. pointy hats that make you look like you are the tooth fairy (one tooth, and its on your head - but its a big one) We did have a preference for silly hats. Other hats include one that looks like you have a sail on your head, others are just the pom pom variety (which - in itself are funny, too .. just more common) - by and large, we did wear a variety of very silly hats indeed ... just not horned ones.

4:41 Well, now *I've* another question! In the hierarchy of the Social Pyramid shown, wouldn't the lowest level be Peasants, with Craftsmen (who knew how to process the raw input into goods that have purpose and utility), then Merchants (who would provide the process and wholesaling and retailing goods, which eliminates the need for massive amounts of direct bartering by individuals)? I'm not saying the presented pyramid base is wrong, merely that I'd expect a slightly different order and am curious as to why this one. If you've historical socio-economic answers, please inform me further.
