Thank-you for being honest about your reading history. I think a lot of young girls are reading and watching sexual content and not realizing the effect it will have on them later in life. Recently, I started watching Outlander, not knowing what it was, and was shocked at the explicit content. I had to turn it off. Since then I make a point of staying away from MA labelled shows. I love that the Lord convicts you when you’re reading (He convicts me too). So thankful He cares enough to do that for us! It’s comforting to know He only wants what’s good for us. 😊

I am so grateful to have found your channel in the last year. I have been on my own faith journey in discovering what is okay and what isn’t. Drawing the line. I basically have to be aware of all things that are sexual in content. Even if a book has dirty talk or something it is too much for me. I struggle because I’m in the same boat, that I love romances but so many cross that threshold that I can’t go back to. Thank you for sharing these in a way that is kind and loving. I can’t tell you how much guilt I had after I realized what I had been consuming before. It’s embarrassing to look back at my Goodreads and see so many explicit titles. Your channel is definitely my go to in recommendations for all books. I appreciate your vulnerability in sharing your walk with it! ❤❤

Ashley, I love having you here. Your comments have encouraged me throughout my time on booktube! I know what it’s like to feel that guilt. You probably know this but I have to tell you- that guilt is from the enemy! Jesus does not shame you. He does look at you with disappointment. He loves you the same when you read clean books and when you get stuck in an explicit book. I have had to hold on to that when I feel like I messed up and read something I shouldn’t have. It’s even worse when I enjoy it! There’s a reason it’s hard to stop. But oh man, the Lord is right there. He purifies us immediately when we come to him. I just felt like I wanted to say that❤️♥️

Giiirl I've said it before, but I'll say it again, I wish you lived in the states because I want to be your best friend! (I also miss talking with you on IG! For my mental health I got rid of my account, but I definitely miss seeing your content!) I relate with this SO much. I was addicted to eroitc literature for several years, and PRAISE God, He pulled me out of that. This world is so obsessed with sex and it's been twisted it beyond recognition of what God intended it to be. The fact that women post on YT, Tiktok, IG, etc. very proudly announcing that they engage in "book p*rn" is heartbreaking. I know how much it messes you up mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and sexually... and it makes me so, so sad to see. Just like you said with the bookstores having entire tables dedicated to erotic romance books, it's so common place now. I could go on and on about this topic, I'm very passionate about it and wanting to help others realize the dangers of it. It isn't just harmless fun like the world would like us to believe. Anywho! I hope you're having a great week and enjoying the holiday season! 💕

I feel connected to you too, despite only chatting on here! It's crazy! Just all of your comments have been so relatable to me and I think we would get along really well in real life too :) I'll do a tour of the US someday and your city will be on it!! Exactly right way to describe it: God pulled me out of it. He just turned me away from it, and I'm so thankful. And every time I slip back to it, He is faithful to meet me and help me out again. I could go on rants about this too, because North America is seriously infected with it, and it's hurting people without them realizing it. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT!

Thanks so much for sharing! This hits home I’m sure for a lot of us. I remember borrowing Joanna Lindsey books from my friend in high school until one day I accidentally left one out on our sofa and my dad found it. I was so mortified!! I was so ashamed and to see the look of disappointment on his face was awful. Then my boyfriends mom (now my mother in law) introduced me to Redeeming Love. I had no idea there were Christian romantic books! It was life changing, truly.

I agree with you Oceana that the popular media seems to focus on the books with the cute covers. It's like they're trying to make the books look very appealing. However, it can be totally deceptive. I read the first book in the Bridgerton series and stopped once I got to the steamy bits. I did not know it was a steamy series. I just knew they were making a tv series about it and it was in the Regency or Victorian time (my favourite time period). Now I check with Goodreads to see if there's references to spicy or steamy bits before I read a book.

I first came across Johanna Lindsey as a teenager at my best friends house. Her mom read them. I tried one and was hooked! I immediately went to the bookstore and devoured every one single one I could find. 🤦🏼‍♀️ This has been a struggle for me, especially after becoming a Christian and feeling conviction from the Holy Spirit. I try to stay away from anything explicit like that now but every now and then fall for one of the populars from the tiktoc table and regret it. It feels like smut. Its lust, not love. And I’m always left feeling bad. I think because of my past with romance novels it may always be a struggle, but I am getting better at making wise choices. The important lesson for those with young daughters is be careful what books they get ahold of! Thank you for discussing this very important topic that I think a lot of Christian women avoid in the churches and therefore, struggle alone.

You read Johanna Lindsey too?! Yes her books are very well written and interesting stories but the content is extremely descriptive and so hard to turn away from once you start. I still try secular romance too - just to see if anything has changed. Sometimes I get through, but most of the time the content is still way too much for me and it brings back all those old feelings of lust.

I really enjoyed this video, Oceana! I read the Bridgerton books at the height of the show popularity & honestly they are not worth the hype at all. I have read SOOOO much historical romance (mostly Christian) since I was a young teen & I’ve read countless Christian fiction works that are better written. It’s weird what gets hyped up so much in the book world. Is anyone else ready for the animated/drawn book cover trend to end? I know I am! I think Tessa Dare’s covers are SUPER misleading. I think being honest about your convictions of explicit content in books is so needed. My favorite non-CF (but clean) historical romance author is Mimi Matthews. I would love to hear your thoughts on her! Xx

I love this ❤ I only recently stopped reading the secular historical romances so I’ve read all these authors. I can skip over the explicit scenes but I was convicted a bit farther. But even skipping those scenes the language is vulgar. They talk about it and it’s very lustful speech if that makes sense. Other historical authors I’ve read that aren’t clean: Jennifer McQuiston; Jennifer Ashley; Lynsay Sands; Lisa Kleypas; Grace Burrows; Maya Banks and Julie Garwood. Hope this helps someone else.

I always have the same dilemma with books by Tessa Dare (and also Jude Devereaux) the covers of their books are so pretty, but I just know they aren’t going to be clean reads so I’m always like “Nope, not even gonna try ‘em!” I love Kristi Ann Hunter’s Christian regency romance, her first book A Noble Masquerade is one of my faves, it’s such a fun and hilariously funny read, I highly recommend it! Also, I’ve read two books by Mimi Matthews (A Holiday By Gaslight, and Fair as a Star) and loved them both, her books aren’t Christian but they are clean, I think the ones I’ve read had a handful of mild swear words but the romance was completely clean! 😍😍😍

I haven't read much historical romance - the covers are soo pretty - but "Romance" as a genre is very interesting to me to look back on how it's evolved over the years or maybe just how it's become more mainstream? Like what you said with the spicy books on display in shops. When I first found booktube I definitely read some books that I 1) didn't realise would have explicit content because I thought a "romance" book would just be cute & fluffy 😅 #sonaive and 2) wouldn't read again or recommend now. For me it really depends though, some I can feel ok to read certain romance if it doesn't have much of that content or if it's easy to skip over. I have read a couple Colleen Hoover books that I thought weren't *too* bad in that department, and the storyline kept me reading but then I tried another of hers and DNF'd it straight away so it is very tricky!
