Historical Sites & Landscapes of Mani, Captain Zacharias footsteps. Skoufomiti.
I recently read the book by Sarantos Kargakos "Zacharias Barbitsiotis the master of kleftouria" Legend and Reality, published by Sideris publications and from the first moment I read it I began to envision shots of various areas of Eastern Mani, where the infamous captain operated as well as other historical areas that I had not shown in previous videos of Mani.
This video is not a tribute to Zacharias (historians have already done that) but it shows the main areas associated with his name like Varvitsa (his birth place), Skoufomiti (he lived 20 years at his peak), and Tseria (the place where he was murdered). I show also Kotronas, Skoutari, Passava castle, Desfina, Pilala, Papadianika, Gefiraki, Gonea, Sotiros Monasteri, Zoodochos Pigi Monastery and Ano Tombra all located in Mani.
The landscapes are magical and the history attached to them makes them even more interesting to explore.
It took me 3 days of filming and many kilometers to travel (in total 1.700 klm).
I dedicate this video to my high school teacher Sarantos Kargakos (historian), thus showing my appreciation and paying tribute to his memory.
* Moutali spring is known from an incident between a Turks group and Captain Zacharias. The name of the leader was Mout Ali.
Zacharias hole is a small cave connected with his tower above. It was his escape exit from the Tower in case of emergency.
My thanks to Giannis Aivaliotis and Elias Hasapis for the arrangements, George Tsouktatos one of the few residents of Skoufomiti who gave me directions of Moutali spring and Zacharias hole (very difficult to find with no path) and unknown stories of the village related to Zacharias.
Music:"Kapetan Zacharias" Kleftiko Petros Prilingos (voice), Vasilis Vilos (clarinet)
