An hourglass-shaped, double-side musical instruments, the gangan or dundun has its origin traced to Oyo state, SouthWest Nigeria.
Players typically use one hand to adjust the leather tensioning thongs between the two membranes, thereby raising or lowering the drum’s pitch, and the other to strike the instrument’s surface with a curved stick.

On this episode of the programme, we explore the historical perspectives and also visited Oyo, the acclaimed origin of the drum, to find out more about this musical oral tradition.
