My favorite historian is Antony Beevor. He's done brilliant stuff on the Spanish Civil War and World War 2.

Ah the days of Joseph McCarthy, when there were only 57 communists in the government.

The way it seems to me, Senator Joseph McCarthy was broadly right about Communist infiltration, but seemed to take a sledgehammer and hatchet to a subject that required a microscope and scalpel.

It was a tool of paranoia. It went after any person whose leaning was arbitrarily "too" left for the governments liking. Yes it was a sledgehammer but it was a method of silencing speech and state-sanctioned thought-crime. It ranged from pop culture figures, writers, academics, activists and plethora of other persons of interest of the state at the time. The cultural impact of it rings to this day and not in all the good ways.
