Jeff, Tom Clayton from Ceres here, looking back at some of your older videos, spent a few days in Half moon bay, took a little trip down the coast on Hwy 1. Was pleasantly surprised to be in the little town of Pescadero, thought about you and Sarah on your adventures, so started looking for the cemetery, JACKPOT! what a find I think I could have spent the day there! Lots of graves from people born in early 1830's on! Wow! So thanks Jeff for a new adventure! Tom in Ceres

What makes your history videos wonderful are your 'before and after' photos of the places you visit. One of the most beautiful drives you can have on any highway is the drive on 395. The east side of the Sierra Nevada's is epic! That crumbly rock Sarah found, i believe was pumice. Some pumice you find actually will float in water. Great video, thank you for sharing.

That prospector was buried long before the highway was built. And that route is just the easiest way to get through with wagons. It was used by everyone traveling back then. Just imagine animal trails in the mountains. There were wagon trails, and that was one. And it was also the easiest way to add the interstate. In the 70s, I remember there was just a pile of rocks and a pair of cowboy boots just poking out of the rocks. There was no fence or head stone. Nothing saying it was a prospector. But there were local "legends" and local stories that a prospector was buried there. I was born in Bishop. My grandpa told me it was a prospector. And if you talked to others in Lee Vining, they'd say the same, an old prospector was buried there. All stories going way back before things were created for bringing tourists or roadside attractions. This was not created as a attraction. I highly suggest reading the historic marker at the rest area in between Bishop and Lee Vining. Could be a adventure for you both to go and fine the vain of gold it talks about. My grandpa said he found it but left to go get help. And could never find it again. He looked for years and always talked about the gold he found and lost. There's so much great history everywhere. I love it!!! Love your videos. Keep them coming.

Back in early 80's early 90's we always drove from San Fernando valley to Bridgeport opening day fishing through 395 hwy what an Amazing drive an scenic views. Haven't be through there since then thanks for history hunters 👍im thinking it's that time again to do so😃 I appreciate the video guy's🏕

I'd forgotten, but in 1977, my Geology class from Cal State Sacto had a field trip to Mono Lake, and we stopped at Panum Crater. I remember picking up a giant piece of pumice! Left there for a famous landslide along 395. Thanks for the memories. And yes, 7,000 feet elevation will take your breath away if you're not used to it. I think Fremont had something to do with building a westward railroad (competition for the Union Pacific), later to be called the "Katy Line".

My family visited Bodie in the 60s the rock crusher was interesting the curtains hung outside the many broken windows we accidentally picked up a square nail in our Volkswagen Beetle and had to fix a flat in the Infamous Donner Pass on our way home. Been there many times! Lot of camping and fishing in that area! That grave wasn’t that fancy in the 90’s just some rocks and and a pair of boots sticking out of the dirt!! My children caught their first fish out of Lee Vining Creek! Love that area!

Nice video. I have camped in the area and done a bit of exploring and prospecting as well. A great many Westerns were made all through the area. There is a Western movie museum located near Lone Pine. Plenty to see along the 395 and I have not even scratched the surface. Regardless have fun and enjoy.

What an amazing Channel! We are kindred spirits. I lived in Tracy CA for ~20 years and wanted to do just what you're doing but the technology wasnt there yet in the 1990's. I was a fan of Huell Howsers methods and stories and was sad to see him leave us. You have definitely taken up the gauntlet. I dug deep into the Gold Rush history of Hiway 49 and spent countless days and hours along the way in Angels Camp, Sonora, Columbia, etc. When I saw your video on Little House on the Prairie episode in the Dardenelles, I jumped out of my chair as I have photographed there so often. Ironically, I am now living near one if the Ingall's homesteads here in South Dakota! (DeSmet, SD). Please keep up the great work. Binge Watching today!

I went to Mono Lake in the 1970s it was full of water and just beautiful. Amazing site. Glad I came back to your postings! Return subbie and history buff!

The "grave" at the 395/120 intersection started as a joke in the early 70's. It started as a mound of dirt and two boots sticking out. The boots were replaced several times then the highway was widen and the ECV set up the present "grave" as we see today.

You do such an awesome job with your story telling and researching of the subject matter

Over the years, my memory has faded some and I'd forgotten the beauty of that area. You two have rekindled my interest in the Mono Lake area. I'm going to promise myself to visit Mono Lake very soon. Howdy, Sarah and Jeff, 1.The unknown Prospector rested between the North and South lanes of 395 the Hwy. went around the Grave, there was a 20 or 30 foot dirt strip between the lanes back then that ran for a long ways. In the 70's the road was redone widen made one surface, leveled out and straighten from south of Bishop to the Nevada line. Can you imagine what it took with the State of California and the studies to move a grave and then to reinter the Prospector, dollar figure that it took and permits and all the agency's involved? When the day came, with shovels they carefully dug down and then brought in a backhoe and they were so careful. There was nothing there just an old wood cross and a pair of boots and a pile of rocks, someone had put it up in the early 60's as a joke. The state moved the grave some distance off to the east, I don't know when the Clamppers (ECV) first started using it as something to put a plaque on, it was long before 2003. 2.On one of the islands out of Mono Lake there is a Volcanic cone its fake was a movie prop for some movie about dinosaurs. I think it was filmed in the 60's. Forrest service let the filming company leave it. Bout all I can think of, Hope that this might help,

Great stuff, I love that area. There is huge amounts of Brine Shrimp in the lake, there is/was a processing plant for the shrimp for tropical fish there. I think Huel Howser did an episode on the islands on the lake.

The books I have on Fremont’s expedition in 1844-45 says that he and his group made camp where the Bridgeport reservoir is and when they left, they went through Devils Gate and on to where Fales Hot Springs are then turn north onto the plateau east of the river. No mention was made of Mono Lake.

This is good history .. I had to back it up again and watch it .. Mono Mills was not spoke of in the one book i have on Bodie which is filled with pictures of that time period .. But there is a freight wagon loaded with lumber it looks like and other wagons with firewood .. I found the Mono Mills site very interesting , in fact i never knew a railroad line was built from any sawmill to Bodie.. As you and Sara visited Bodie several times , could you see where a railroad line came into town? I don't think you spoke of it if i remember .. Now you got me going through the old book again .. Funny how history hits you like that , you think you understand who , when , why , what for , how long and it turns out i got it wrong .. kinda funny ..I really liked this one ...good history here ..

Goodness. Great Video !! Very Informative. The s.all town I grew up in was the Same Small Town General Omar Bradley moved to at the age of 15.

In the spring of 2018 took a trip from Maine to the West coast. We stayed just to the south of Lone Pine and traveled daily from there. One day to the internment camp, excellent bakery in Bishop, Mono Lake and then back past Mammoth. Another over to Death Valley and back. One late afternoon up to Movie Road on the way towards Whitney Portal (which was closed). Very nice area the Eastern Sierra's (was recommended by campground host in Joshua Tree) and many fond memories of this area, should have spent more time here!

Thank you for a great video again. Prairie Flower was probably an invention, yes, but Adaline did die in 1859. She had an impersonator in Aurora... which may explain the confusion.

This is one cool video. Really. The UGS of the Prospector was neat to look at. Maybe both my wife and I will drive out there come late spring and see it. Thats really interesting.
